Post by: shoes on Monday 07 May 12 12:33 BST (UK)
Seeking information on parents and siblings of Mary Miller, born about 1840,
Glasgow Scotland. In1869 she married John Yates in Cathedral Manchester,
Lancashire England. She is known to have a brother William who conducted a
business supplying Naval Stores in Portsmouth.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Shoes

From the census entries for John Yates and wife Mary, I think it is John Yates who shows as born in Scotland c. 1840/2? John Yates's 1891 census is the one that looks to show him as born in Glasgow.

Have you seen the marriage cert to confirm at least fathers' names for John and wife Mary? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJTY-L4F

Mary Miller looks to have been a Lancashire girl. Is the William you mention her brother or John Yates?

Thank you so much for such a quick reply.
Yes I have seen the marriage Cert you mention.
and Yes ..John Yates was born in Baldernock Scotland 1841.I have information about him.
An elderly family member had told me that Mary was born near Glasgow and her father had businesses there. but that is all I know.
The William I mentioned was Mary's brother.
The children of John and Mary show James as the first son..name of John's Father.,..and
William as second son...so the father's name also could be William.
Isabella was the name of the first daughter, but that was also the name of John's Mother !!!!

Shoes, you might need to retrace steps for your sources of info for places of birth  :-\ From their marriage in 1869 and subsequent censuses, these are the place name they gave for their births:

John Yates:

1871 - 29 and born in Scotland
1881 - 39 and born in Scotland
1891 - 49 and born in Glasgow

Mary Miller:

1871 - 29 and born in Manchester
1881 - 39 and born in Manchester
1891 - 49 and born in Manchester

As you can see, they are pretty consistent with their info for the censuses.

What were the names and occupations from the marriage cert? You said James for John Yates, what was his occupation? And for Mary Miller, her father's name and occupation from that 1869 marriage? Were there any family names for witnesses to the marriage that could also help you?

Why do you think that John Yates was born c. 1841 Baldernock in Stirlingshire to a James and Isabella (Story)?

Thanks for your interest, MonicaL. My last post seems to have confused things.
Mary Miller married John Yates (my gt g'parents) in Manchester 1869. I don't have access to this marriage Cert as yet and so can't follow through on parents and witnesses.
John Yates was the son of James Yates and Isabella Storrie born Baldernock 1841. they shifted to Rothesay on Earl of Bute's Estate. My g'father was John Storrie Yates ..the 3rd  son of John and Mary Yates above. I am contact with spikey5 on the Yates Forum re that connection.
Mary Miller had a brother William who is shown in 1881 Census at Portsea Eng, and he lists his place of birth as Manchester too.
As you say maybe I am looking at this incorrectly. However my elderly relative who said Mary was born in Scotland has been correct on all other information given to me.

MonicaL..The other connection I mentioned was the naming of children etc
Did Mary and John Yates name their children in the Scottish manner.
Isabella A,(died aged 11) James, Annie B, William S, and John Storrie. (there was another girl who died at birth) Was Isabella named after Mary's Mother ?  (or John's?) James (John's Father) Annie B (?) William S(Mary's Father?)John S ( after his father)
..I have also seen Mary named Mary Ann.
so I had the idea that Mary's parents were maybe William and Isabella.
Still I shall continue looking at the Manchester data.
Thanks lots for your input.

Hi Shoes

If I can give you any advice, if you I would look to order that marriage cert for John and Mary. Family stories are great and your relative from what you say has been really helpful, but you need to verify some key info along the way here. There are some discrepancies here that you need to iron out regarding places of birth for John and Mary, as mentioned above from their census entries between 1871-1891. Getting some confirmation at least on their fathers' names and occupations may help you here.
