Hi
If anyone has access to Wales Census data for 1841, could they if they have a chance look for one Mary Powell age about 3 resident in Flintshire - possibly Higher Kinnerton or Hope
Any info of her or her family would be gratefully received
thanks
Dave

Hi - thanks for the info - I'm pretty sure though that the family resided in Hope in the 1830's moving to Higher Kinnerton later (this is due to a number of Children born at Hope according to the 1851 census). One thing I've learned with this sleuthing though is that you can take nothing for granted!!

Hi Dave
Just a word of caution ~ If they were living in Hope, the pieces for that area are missing for the 1841 so you won't be able to find the family.
Sorry

Thanks Gnu - not good news :(

ok - next angle on this one... :-\
Assuming Mary was born in 1837 in Hope (per the 1851 Census entry), could someone have a look to see if that birth record exists in Parish records - particularly looking for Father as Samuel Powel(l) with Mother Martha (Sheldon).
The coincidence of Mary Powell being a servant next door to Samuel Powell's family in the 1851 Census, and being born in Hope in the same timescale as Samuel and Martha's other children is hopefully too strong and I can get proof of her parentage. ???
This would then tie in with my GGGF Charles Powell being the illegitimate son of Mary, born at Union House, Broughton on 6 September 1857, and quoting his Grandfather Samuel in lieu of his father on his wedding certificate.
thanks in advance
Dave

There is a baptism in Saint Cynfarch and Saint Cyngar Hope parish:
Mary Powell 28th January 1837
dau of Samuel & Martha a labourer of Estyn.

The private baptism of Charles Powell was at Hawarden Church of St. Mary, Broughton.
September 18th 1857 illegitimate son of Mary Powell of the Hawarden Union Workhouse. A Spinster.(performed by Edward Austin, Curate).
Not sure if you already had this ;)

Thanks for the additional info Colin - I was not aware of his Baptism record.
It looks right I'm on the right track at long last - Charles' heritage has been a difficult one to crack - I knew of his GP via the various census' of the time but proving that Mary Powell was related to Charles GP was always the roadblock.
Thanks to you and others on this forum I finally have some proof and avenues for further research.
Kinda disconcerting to find out that your identity could have been very different though in other circumstances
cheers
Dave
