Title: William Bartlett BURT
Post by: kilmartin on Friday 04 May 12 10:01 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace the whereabouts of William Bartlett Burt and his wife Maria Teresa Furber. They married in Maiden Newton, Dorset, England in 1842 after which I can find no trace of them.

The IHR NSW has an online land record index listing a William Bartlett Burt with one entry with a Title deed in 1853.  I suspect this could be the person I am looking for.   An old internet post suggests that they went to Sydney and that Maria was a school teacher.  If this was the case it would explain why I have been unable to trace them in the UK.

Any help to confirm this family would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the very prompt response.  Does this refer to a sailing to Australia in 1849 when Maria was 29?  Sorry to need clarification.

Maria Teresa Burt nee Furber was the daughter of James Furber and Marcia Cull.

William Bartlett Burt was the son of Elias Burt.  Sorry I do't know his mother's name.

William B Burt 39, Clerk, Puddletown Dorsetshire, parents - James & Rebecca (both dead)

Maria T Burt 29, Anderson Dorset, parents - James & Marcia? Furber (both dead)

Both were C of E, could read & write, good health, no relations in Colony, no complaints

Ship Sarah arrived Sydney 10 December 1849

You mention Elias as William's father's name but James is listed on the passenger list

This does indeed look right - many thanks for the confirmation.

Maria was baptised Dec 1816 in Winterborne Anderson so would have been 33 - so the age of 29 is misleading but as the list gives her native place as Anderson it must be right as Anderson is very small.  James and Marcia had both died by 1849 so that confers.

I only have William Burt's father from their marriage certificate giving his name as Elias but I did not find his birth record.  There is a daughter baptised in Puddletown/Piddletown to a James Elias and Rebecca so I suspect this is the same family.

My interest is in tracing the Furber line so haven't looked in detail at the Burt though they may also link in.

Any way of discovering if they had family in Australia?

And I couldn't find a remarriage for Maria either

Me neither.

Is it possible that they went to Victoria? Braidwood is close to the NSW/Vic border.

I couldn't find Maria Burt on the Victorian Teachers Indexes.  On the NSW state records there is a teacher Marion Burt http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au

Now that's a huge divide if it's her hubby in Braidwood.

Any children born to them in QLD?
