KR1940 Para 390 (xvi)
Ceasing to fulfill army physical requirements.
Was there a letter after the xvi? The subclause is broken into two further divisions:
(a) unfit for service except in dire emergencies or in some other duties
(b) unfit for any form of army service.

"RAMC transfered to RAmc wef authy:-act 626/39 W.O.L 20 Misc 1008 (AGID) d7-4-40 +ME order 1328/4? +BM/02E/22/1442/A.d 13-3-42"
wef - with effect from
the rest of the code refers to the regulation - dating from 1939 [626/39] and updated in 194? [1328/4?]- which authorised and governed your man's transfer. The final digits are the date on which the transfer occurred 13th March 1942.
Every official action in the army is governed by some rule or other, these are constantly being updated and re-worded. Nothing happens without the right "chitty" and the correct rule/authority having been cited.

Thankyou for all your help.
Also mentioned on the sheet is
X(II) List
2GH
Y List.
I would scan the document but scanner is not cooperating this morning, sorry

X (ii) means that he was evacuated, due to medical reasons, and so was no longer on the role of his previous unit.
Y List - after he had recoverd, he would be placed in a holding unit awaiting further orders. Some were sent to other units, others discharged because of medical reasons.
-
Thankyou for your help, have found that he was in 2nd general hospital/middle east.
Discharged from the Y List.

hi my grandad was discharged in 1949 with cause of discharge K.R.40 Para 390 (1x)(a) can some one please help with this. Also how do you find out where he was treated.
Many thanks Denise

There were a whole host of reasons why men were discharged from the Armed Forces, all governed by King's Regulations [KR] which were regularly re-issued - so KR40 is the 1940 edition of King's Regulations. Paragraph 390 of those Regulations laid down in various sub-sections the detailed reasons for discharge. I don't know what section ix [Roman numerals for 9] sub section "a" stood for in 1940 - in the first war it stood for "unfitted for the duties of the corps" but that might well be different in 1940.

The 1940 edition of the KRs states:
Para 390 (ix) Free after .... years' service. (the .... indicating the specific number of years)
(a) A free discharge maybe granted to a re-engaged soldier after at least 12 years, or under Special War Office instructions.
I believe service during time of war counted as double, so he may have been discharged after 6, or as part of the demobilisation (as per WO instructions).
