Title: Halstead House, Southborough, Bickley, Kent

Hi there
Has anyone ever heard of Halstead House in Southborough in Kent.   I have a Charles Minto Roberts living there with his parents in the 1911 census as a Land Agent and Surveyor.  I am not getting anywhere!!!!!   Any tips would be good, I am thinking it would be a rather nice property as they were an affulent family.

Hi Jo

If you look at the Enumerators' book images for the property that you found you will find a list of the houses that the enumerator visited, hopefully in some sort of order.

As a rough guide, Southborough is south of Bickley in between The Crown (now a Toby Carvery) at the corner of Crown Lane running east from Bromley Common, and the Crooked Billet which is in Southborough Lane (a continuation of Crown Lane) opposite Blackbrook Lane (Google maps is a bit out  ::) ).  So Halstead House was probably somewhere in that area.

Pages 269 and 270 list "Southborough Villas &c" - list does not include a "Halstead House".  The same Directory has
Roberts Charles Q, Owthorpe, Brenchley

Kelly's Directory of Kent 1913 has
Roberts Charles Q, Owthorpe, Brenchley, Paddock Wood

Wondered if this was Charles Quincey Roberts?

The 1911 Enumerator's Book lists "Crawford, Southborough; Draycott, Southborough; Halstead House, Southborough; Glenageary, Southborough;"

Can't find any on the 1914 list of Southborough Villas.

You won't find those houses in Southborough near Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge; it's Southborough at Bromley Common/Bickley area - two different Southboroughs  ;D

The Times, Jun 17, 1911
"Deaths -  - On the 15th inst, Mary Augusta, wife of Charles Quincey Roberts, of Brenchley, Kent, and Halstead House, Bickley".

(have sent PM re "Old Maps" and house numbers against 1911 residents).

Bromley Directories show that the Roberts's were there only in 1911, so you were lucky to catch them. The 1914 directory gives Halstead House as No 12.

Southborough was renamed Southborough Lane between directories of 1935 and 1936, and No 12 became No 178, where it is now Ashglade Care Home. BR2 8AL, second house west of Austin Avenue, if you want to drive by on Google. The right-had third of the house is a recent extension, some time between maps of 1960 and 1996.
