The Day God Called You Home

God looked around his Garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
And knew that you would never get well on earth again.
He saw your path was difficult, he closed you tired eyes,
He whispered to you "Peace be Thine" and gave you wings to fly.
When we saw you sleeping so calm and free of pain,
We would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again.
You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide,
You live on through your children, you're always by our side.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you on the day God called you home

RIP Rabbit xx

Hello Helen,

Yes your mum will be sorely missed here and the other chat place she frequented.  I have "known" your mum for many years, from when she first hopped into the BBC family History forum before she became a member of Rootschat.  We have all stuck together through thick and thin and Jan will be very much missed with her wonderful knack of saying the right thing when one is down or down with health problems.

Its going to be a tough week for you all, take care and give the girls a big cuddle from some of their "virtual aunties" here and over on myfamily.

Hello wonderful people - the messages are still coming - thank you all so much.  For those of her friends who wanted to come to her funeral it is on Wednesday 16th May.  Apologies but Pa Rabbit and I have completely lost track of who we have told about what and I know some of you have asked to be told the details. Please contact me if you want more info.  I can't express what an amazing comfort Rabbit's RootsChat familiy has been to me this last week.  I have printed all your messages to go on a special message board on the day.
I am also going to read the poem that was posted 'When God called you home', at the funeral.  I just hope I can get through it without crying - I haven't as yet!

To Jan's daughter......

Please remember that funerals give us the chance not only to mourn someone's passing, but to also to celebrate their lives.  It will be a time of mixed emotions for you, so please don't think you're being disrespectful if you find yourself laughing or joking - it's how she would want you to be.  I lost my mum 16 years ago, and the last couple of weeks of her life were similar to your mother's, and when I think of her now, I think of her in happier and healthier times.

I never had the privilege of meeting your mum, but when she found out about my illness only a matter of months ago, she sent me lots of private messages of encouragement, intermingled with jokes (and even a recipe for chicken soup, to keep my strength up !).  I knew she wasn't in the best of health, but she used to shrug that off, and only wanted to concentrate on me. Jan was a caring and generous lady.

I won't be able to attend Jan's funeral because of my bad health, but I will be thinking of you all on the 16th.

Love to all your family, from Nick.

Hello Helen (Rabbit's daughter)

I must thank you for the e-mail you sent me about Jan, although I had already heard the sad news on here.  I "met" Jan on Rootschat and she contacted me via a private message giving me lots of advice about a Neighbourhood watch scheme I was setting up for my road, which is when she gave me her e-mail address and we contacted each other like that.  Jan was always so cheerful despite her health problems and I'll miss her emails whether jokey ones, or ones about Dogwatch.

I'm sorry, I won't be able to attend her funeral, as I have a hospital appointment on the same day.  I'll be thinking of you all as well as Jan of course.

Regards
Lizzie

Your mum was such a lovely lady, always there with her humour, a laugh and a joke. She was so helpful to me on the site. God bless her. My thoughts are with you and your family at this very sad time Edith (AKA Edielee on BBC and Lincsbabe on here) XXXX

"Oh dear, oh dear", sobbed a tiny mole
"Who will help a fairy out of my hole?
It's full of mud and crawly things
She can not get out cos she has hurt her wings.
Oh help her white rabbit your arms are long,
They say you are good and I know you are strong."
"Don't bother me." the white rabbit said,
He shut up his eyes and his ears went red.
A little brown RABBITB hopped out of the gorse
"I'm not very strong but I'll try of course."
Her little tail bobbed as she waddled in,
The muddy water came up to her chin.
But she held her fast by her tiny hand
And helped her to get to fairyland.
When the day dawned in the early light
That little brown RABBITB was silvery white.

I don't look in to the Rootschat site regularly.  I am a former member of the BBC site, where Rabbit hopped in - quite often at the last minute if I remember correctly.

It's always very sad to hear of this kind of news and I send my condolences to her family.

Please remember the good times - and with time that is what you will remember.

Hello all

Just to let you know myself and Glencare were privileged to attend Jan's funeral today. It was a lovely service conducted by a wonderful vicar with a strong clear voice and a sense of humour! The church is as Glen said " a proper church" set opposite a duckpond in a little village with a primary school next to it. Sorry I cant find a picture at the moment, but it has the most wonderful Yew arch as you go in. Helen read Ed's poem without a hitch, although I must say it brought a lump to my throat even though I had read it before. As the coffin was being removed from the church a blackbird started singing as if to welcome her. The internment  took place in a lovely well maintained graveyard next to the church. With the birds twittering in the trees and the children from the primary school at playtime next door it is a very "happy place" to be laid to rest.

After the service Glen and I got to talk to Helen and Richard, Jan's children, and also to Jan's brother in law. We also met Molly and Megan, two lovely little girls. I told Helen that you had been posting messages today and no doubt she will get around to looking at them in due course. I also asked if I could put up the order of service and as such attach it so everyone who wasn't able to make it can see it.  Just hope that my computer skills work ;) Although we didn't get to speak to Paul, as he was speaking to other members of the congregation and Glen and I weren't able to return to the house afterwards due to work commitments, I asked that Helen passed on all our messages of support for the family and hope that they join us on the board again soon even if it is just to say "Hello"

Hello everyone

I think mum would have been proud and happy with today's send-off. Still feels very unreal that she is no longer with us.  She had a lovely service which was both funny and moving and one she would have approved of I am sure.  A huge thank you to those to came along today to support us and say farewell to Rabbit.  Your good wishes and support has been amazing at this diffucult time
Love
Helen (Rabbits offspring)  xxx

What a lovely picture of our dear Rabbit that is! That smile, those twinkling eyes. I never met her in 'real life', but somehow, everything I knew about Jan is there in her face.

Hello Helen,

I am so pleased that the service went well, a special send off for a very special lady. She was very much loved and will be sorely missed.

I miss her humour and her wisdom and her advice, even when she regularly lectured about me about how I should stop being a vegetarian because it couldn't be good for me! ;)  She has left a rabbit shaped hole in my life.

Look after yourself

Love Elin xx

Hi jmp,

Thank you very much for telling us about the service, I was very sad not to be able to go and
that really helped.

I haven't been able to open the order of service and would love to see it.  Is any one else having a problem with it or is it just me?

Thanks

Elin

Lord of All Hopefulness ...
Yes, the overwhelming joy and trust of that hymn is so much in tune with our darling Rabbit's spirit.
I'm glad there was sunshine and birdsong.

Thank you jmp for updating us about Rabbit's service.  It sounds like it was really lovely and in keeping with the happy spirit of Rabbit herself  :)

To Helen, your mother was much loved and respected by us here on Rootschat as is evident by all these messages. She will definitely live on in all our hearts!

Thanks jmp for posting the order of service complete with the lovely photo of Jan - what kindness and humour is there in her eyes.

I'm so glad the day has gone so well, complete with the blackbird - she would have loved that.

Thanks Jan for all emails that I could never quite keep up with, the common sense, the friendly advice and concern you showed me.  As with so many other people I'm going to miss you.

I've been at a complete loss for what to say because this came as such a shock. Hoping you don't mind me adding something at this late date, but Jan was also an extremely good restorer and I wasn't the only person who thought that, as this link proves.

Dear Helen, your lovely mum was in a lot of discomfort when she very kindly restored this photograph for me and I'll treasure it.

Oh dear. I am the sort of rubbish friend who lets the weeks go by without telephoning and so I have only just found out by speaking to Paul. She had so much energy and interest in everything that I was sure she was going to bounce back soon and the flood of emails resume. The order of service for the funeral was just the thing and I am sorry to have missed the event.

It is sad when death takes away someone we love but, as long as we live, it cannot take away our happy memories and I hope all of us, especially her family, can take comfort from these memories and and of course remember to do what she told us to do.
