Title: Alice and family - clean and date please
Post by: irish swallow on Tuesday 01 May 12 10:53 BST (UK)
You all did such a good job on Emily could you see what you can do for her daughter and granddaughter.  All I know is Alice was born in 1868 and they lived in London - again I have back of first photo but can't find any info on Photographers.

Jim

Found 110 Hugh Rd Ilford on 1911 census and living there was Frederick Kelf a PHOTOGRAPHER !

I looked him up on google and found he was described as a successful south London Photographer - from Great Yarmouth - his brother Walter was a well known photogapher as well. BUT I see no sign of Frederick being in London in 1901

Jim - you win - where in Islington as I can't find him on ancestry or findmypast !!!!

Are you are good at judging age of children - how old would you say the young girl was, or even the mum.

She is the same Lily as in photo you dated late 1920's early 1930's.

We had thought she might have been born cir 1911 but looks like it was before that.

Nope - just doing another look now - complicated story as Lily was born before mum married so we don't know what name she had been registered under - or her exact age - mum not found under maiden name - she married 1913 - could that be photo to celebrate that occasion

BINGO think I Just found them on 1911 - wonderful what you can do when you search using only first names and drag your way through pages and pages - been doing this nearly all afternoon - Lily born 1907/8

I don't think that Walter's brother was a photographer
I am researching early East London and Essex Photographers and have found several ‘Kelf’s’ who were photographers.

Walter Kelf (1876 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk – 2 Feb 1923 in Chichester) his brother - Frederick Joseph Kelf (b. 1870 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk) seems to have be involved in the Timber Trade, as does not show up as a photographer also he appears not to have travelled to London.

There is a Frederick Kelf (b. abt 1868 in Great Yarmouth) who was a Photographer at Pier Avenue, Clacton-on-Sea (c. 1902) and then Brentford, Middlesex and in 1911 at Ilford, Essex.
His address is given on the back of the photograph
Also a
Frederick Robert Kelf (b. abt 1869 in Great Yarmouth) who was a Photographer in Dulwich (1891) and a Photographic Assistant in Islington (1901). He seems to have gone into partnership with George W R Holden-Tooley in Brixton, Lambeth from 1892 – 1893 (according to PhotoLondon website).
While all these Kelf’s were all born in Great Yarmouth around the same time, they all have different parents, grandparents and great grand parents. It seems odd that while their families all lived in the Yarmouth/Norwich area, at present I can find no connections between them?

If anyone has info on the Kelf Family and can connect these different photographers I would appreciate it.

Yes I have picked up on that reply - David is it the people in the photograph that are connected to you or the photographer who took the photo. Yvonne

You are now on page 3 of pages relating to this query - if you click on page 1 the very first entry is my photo which I was wanting cleaned up - and also the back of the photo with the photographers name - the mother in the photo is my great grandmother's cousin. As the topic moved on we started to talk about the photographer himself. If you make you way through the answers to the topic you will understand better.
