Title: Thomas Gammage 1795
Post by: davebprice on Tuesday 01 May 12 07:14 BST (UK)
Trying to find exact birth information and parents for Thomas Gammage who was possibly born in Northamptonshire in 1795.  The only info I have is that his wife's name is possibly Elizabeth and they had a child -- Christian (Christiana) Gammage, born Sept 1820 in Hardingstone.  Any information is appreciated.

HI Dave.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

The only marriage that seems to fit on the Northants Marriage Indexes.

Duston
11 Dec 1817
Thomas GAMMAGE otp Elizabeth WHITSEY otp

The child Christian was baptised as you rightly say in Hardingstone
on 15th Oct 1820.

Thank you Sandy!  Did the baptism record for Christian happen to mention Thomas and Elizabeth as the parents?  I am trying to create that link if they are the correct parents.

Best,

Dave

Excellent!  Were there any witnesses recorded on the marriage record of Thomas and Elizabeth?  If so, what were the names?  My next goal is to find parents of Thomas and Elizabeth which means I need to also begin looking at baptismal records.  I just need to get a direction of names to look for.  :)

I can not help at the moment with witnesses Dave as I was quoting
from a index.

The baptism of Elizabeth is on the N.B. Indexes.

The baptism of Thomas is a bit harder to work out.

The only ones I can see are in Brixworth.

Ask Alan Clarke on my links below as he does free look ups
on some of his and Marilyn's work.

Hi Dave.

I looked at the original Parish Record today and the witnesses
did not help.  :(

Jane Whitsey and George Chenney

Sandy,

I appreciate you taking your time to look into my inquiry.  Knowing you have spent many hours helping so many of us, I want to extend my personal gratitude.

When marriage witnesses are listed on the record is the standard format to list the woman's maiden surname or her married surname, or is there a standard format they used in record keeping?

Best,

Dave

Hi again Dave.

Thank you for your kind words.  :)

If a woman was married it would be her married surname
and if not then her maiden name.

Hello,

My cousin in Canada and I have been working on Thomas Gammage 1795. We have Elizabeth Whitsey as his wife.

At present we have a Thomas Gammage 1758 and Mary as the father and mother though we have some reservations about this. We feel that a generation may have been jumped and are presently exploring that as an option.

If you interested in this particular Gammage line please let me know and perhaps we may look at options togther.

Best wishes, Ian

Yes, I would like to work with you.  I have the marriage record of Thomas and Elizabeth but haven't had success yet trying to find his parents.  I have thought about looking at surrounding areas to see if a record exists beyond where he was married.

There were several GAMMAGE (or variants) families just to the west of Duston in Weedon Bec in the late 18th century, which might be worth your while exploring. If you find any links with the ones in Walgrave or Scaldwell get back to me, as I have more on them.

Greetings TicknerV,

I do have many in Weedon Bec and some in the other areas. I have sent you a private mail as I would like to share information.

Best wishes, Ian

A Henry GAMMAGE of Duston, yeoman, had his Will proved on October 4, 1768. A Thomas GAMMAGE "Gardener" was recorded in November 29, 1762 in the Militia List for Lamport. He was probably the Thomas GAMMAGE of Lamport who had a Will proved on November 11, 1769. A Thomas GAMAGE (c.1775-1850) and his wife, Mary GAMAGE (nee MORTON) (c.1776-1842) appear to have had issue in West Haddon. They were married in West Haddon on October 29, 1797. What were the names of any of the children of your Thomas, which might help to identify the correct family?
