Looking for an online site to store and alter my family tree and suggestions?
I have moved to an iPad for my main computer and would like to store and show my tree to others via the web any good sites for this free if possible. Or any software for the iPad. I currently use a macbook pro but when i give work up next year I will have to hand it back to work. This is why I will need web storage or software for the iPad.
Thanks

Totally agree with youngtug. I've been using tribalpages for 6 years now and can't see past it.
It'll accept a gedcom at first too if you have one.
There are certain limits to what the free version gives you, such as the number of people (500) and images (50).
However, even the most expensive upgrade is only $40 / £30 per year.
Pricing here..... http://www.tribalpages.com/pricing.html

Another vote for Tribalpages here :) I started off with the free version mainly so I could access my tree at any time from anywhere, but then paid about £15 so I could easily produce decorative family trees. They've been very popular as presents for anniversaries etc and are well worth the money.
You can keep the tree private or share with family members as you wish. I've also made contact with some distant relatives through the site.

tribalpages.com
Thanks I have had a go
http://geeuk.tribalpages.com/ seems good software/website

You can alter the privacy settings to suit your requirments. It is best to keep living people private.
-
And do be aware that if you make it free for all to see, people will take info and photos from your tree willy nilly - often without asking and sometimes even if it isn't correct for their trees! ::)

Had a look at Tribalpages but it seems to be US orientated. Is there a way of stipulating a country? I could not find it anywhere.
-
No I don't think so Ann. But it's not a problem, I have managed to pay for the lowest membership from my UK bank account without any difficulty. If I could work out how to do it, it's not complicated ;)

Apart from having to make payment, if you choose to have a paid site, it doe's not matter what country it is based in. Tribalpages doe's not have records etc, to search, it is a place to store/display your tree It doe's have the added advantage of being able to search for names in other tribalpages trees but that is not the main reason for the use of it.

rootsweb/ancestry is also very good:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
There is one section for the tree, another one for a full web site (that you create) and another section for searching out ancestors.
Click on the globe under my shield for the beginning of our web site and there you will find a link to the tree.

The free version allows more than 500, in fact I don't think there is a limit. You are limited to only 50 photo's and only 500 words in the notes for each person in your tree.
-
You're correct youngtug. It's unlimited.
For some reason I had it in my mind that the number of names were limited, not the number of words.
Thanks for keeping me right.

Another vote for TribalPages. Doesn't matter where in the world it is - it's in cyberspace!
Just one or two caveats: make sure you don't accidentally put in people with the wrong gender. If you goof, there's no way to change gender - you have to totally delete the person record and start again.
Also, beware of what does and does not print on reports. Eg you may want to create a custom event for each census so that they appear on descendant reports etc.
The gedcom download option works really well, so you can load the file into other software for deduplication, checking and other processing.
Be aware that unlike some other sites TribalPages doesn't give you access to any BMD, census or other records - but it does tell you when someone else on the site has the same person in their tree, and put you in touch with them.
Really useful TribalPages tips are here:

Possibly like myself Dave you got the email from Tribal Pages which stated that free pages were to be limited to 500 individuals ..... although nothing seems to have come of this.

Ah, that's a possibility. I'm not going completely mad then! ::)

Re software for the ipad have a look at Gedview .... there are limitations to the functions provided but I have found it an excellent app. Equally if you have an ancestry account the Ancestry App is an excellent tool for displaying a tree from their site

Tell the IT department that your macbook is out of date and too slow for work so they should give it to you as an extra leaving present....
