Hi All,
I have been searching for information about my g-g grandfather, John Jackson, who was born in Wigan in about 1834. I found him, a widower, in the 1871 and 1881 censuses in Manchester (Chorlton) with two children, Joseph (my g-grandfather) born 1863, and Jane, born 1865. The mystery is that I cannot find any record of his marriage to Mrs Jackson, (no idea of her name), nor any record of a death of a female Jackson, between 1865 and 1871, of about the right age. The children were both born in Salford, but whether John married in Wigan or the Manchester area, I cannot discover.
I would be so grateful for any information or suggestions anyone might have. Thanks, Jos Le Voi, Brisbane.

If I have found the correct entry on 1871 census there are several children : Mary 1856, George 1859, Joseph 1863, Jane 1865, Martha Ann 1868. All the children were born in Salford, except the youngest who was born in Gorton. There is also a sister who is a widow, Phoebe Turner. John was a hammerman for a smith.
If it is the correct entry then we can assume John's wife died between 1868 (possibly 1867) and 1871.
I think I have found the family on 1861 census at 81 West Union Street, Salford. The wife's name is difficult to read: possibly Martha, Mary or Margaret, born about 1834 in Manchester. John was a grammarman. I assume the census taker misheard the word 'hammerman.'

Oreo,
Thank you very much; I think you may be onto something there. My grandparents remained in the Salford and Gorton areas until after ww2, and all the males were metal workers, blacksmiths, mechanics and engineers. I just wonder what had happened to little Martha Ann by the 1881 census, when I am pretty sure they were at living 33 Casson Street. Anyhow, I am very grateful. Jos.
