Title: Charles Joseph Johnson
Post by: chrissief on Monday 30 April 12 00:19 BST (UK)
This is a wonderful site, which I have recently joined--with very knowledgeable members.
I hope someone might point me in the right direction to solve a problem I have been facing for sometime now.
My Great Grandfather was Charles Joseph Johnson.Born 11.1.1841 in the parish of St Peters,Church of Ireland,Dublin. To parents Richard Ireland Johnson and Ellen Teresa(Doran). They were residing at 1,Montague Street.
All I know of my GGrandfather was after he enlisted in the R.A.and landed up in India,in 1867 and the marriage to his wife Elizabeth Gibbons.I can document their life in India, right up to their deaths and burials in Bangalore.
What I am missing is his earlier life in Ireland.Like what happened to his parents and the names of his siblings.I havenīt a clue where he enlisted, and how he lands up in India.I have searched for army records, but with no luck.
Can anyone please help me--or tell me where I should be looking.
With very grateful thanks.
Chrissie

This is the first marriage in 1834 from www.irishgenealogy.com

I think this is Richard remarrying in 1849

No problem you're welcome

I thought it strange that there are no children between the marriage in 1834 and Charles in 1841 until I saw this -

That looks as if Charles Joseph was baptised both CoI and Roman Catholic

It was common in the 1800s for a mixed marriage to baptise the children in different churches especially the daughters the same as the mother and the sons the same as the father. It could explain no family between 1834 and 1841 if they were girls baptised as catholics. That said though I am not seeing any immediate records for other children.

best of luck

Hello again, and thank you so much.
So my Charles Joseph was baptised just "Joseph"--and the Charles part would have come from his grandfather!!
That gives me alot more to work on,and again I cannot thank you enough.
Best wishes
Chrissie

Well both really
Charles Joseph in the CoI church and just Joseph in the Catholic

Yes,I get that now.On all his other documents hes known as Charles Joseph---but just "Joseph" gives me another angle!!
I think I have found a brother for him now--Richard Joseph baptised 23.9.1837.
They were certainly fond of the name "Joseph"!!!
Many thanks again
With best wishes
Chrissie
