Hello,
I am looking for information regarding my great grandparents
Martin Dempsey born 1857 died 1908 lived in Johnsgate street Wexford and also my grandmother Bridget Dempsey whose maiden name was also Dempsey born 1858 died 1909.
Because my grandmother had the same name after she married I am having difficulty in tracing her parents- trying to separate which Dempsey belongs to which side of the family Maternal or Paternal etc

dont know if you already have a marriage cert, but these look possible as the correct references for Martin & Bridget from the BMD Index on Familysearch :
Name: Martin Dempsey
Registration district: Wexford
Event type: Marriage
Year: 1877
Volume: 9 / page : 464
name: Bridget Dempsey
[same references as Martin]
Cert should show father's name, occupations, currents residences of the bride and groom.. which should help ..
see : Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433040.0.html)
Details included on a Marriage Cert (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433042.0.html)

Welcome to Rootschat :)
Would 1877 be too early for their marriage? There is one where both Martin and Bridget Dempsey are on the same page.
Wexford Volume 9; page 464.
The marriage certificate would give their fathers' names.
best wishes
heywood

Hi Irishlass20
As discussed in our PM's here's the 1890 baptism record for your Grandmother (baptised 3rd July) which also confirms her 1914 marriage details.

Here's the 1886 baptism record for your GM's elder sister, Mary Dempsey.

Hi
Martin & Bridget Dempsey of 12 John's Gate street (their address per the 1901 census of Ireland) are also the great grandparents of my Father. I know he has relatives in the UK, some of his father's brothers and sisters (my father's aunts & uncles) emmigrated there, possibly in the 1920's or 30's. I found my great great grandparents on this link from www.nationalarchives.ie
Dempsey household, John's Gate (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wexford/Wexford_Urban/Johns_Gate/1805968/)

Hello,
Good to hear the family connection
Which of the children were your fathers grandparents?
There were about 8 children altogether my grandmother was Bridget Dempsey and my great grandmother was also called Bridget Dempsey
My mother left Ireland in the 50's but I know that some of her family left even earlier because of work etc
-
Yes Martin & Bridget Dempsey had 8 children, Thomas, Terence, Mary, Martin, Bridget, William, John & Margaret.
My Father's grandfather was Thomas Dempsey who married a Bridget Dwyer in 1903, when he was 21, they then moved to Barrack Street in Wexford Town and remained there until he died in the mid 50's, (possibly 1954 or 1955, we are unsure of the exact date). One of their sons who remained in Wexford was my Father's Dad. Some of his older siblings emmigrated to the UK, and we don't know anything about them since.

I have him in my family tree on ancestry.co as Thomas Dempsey born 4th October 1878. He married an Anne Dwyer and they had two sons Patrick1906 and Jojn 1907 Thats all I have on them at the moment
send me your email and I can give you access to my tree

Are you sure about that 1878 DOB? In the 1901 census Thomas Dempsey is stated to be aged 19 and the Wexford Town baptism register supports this - he was baptised on 26th May 1882.

In Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 about Thomas Dempsey
Name: Thomas Dempsey
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 4 Oct 1878
Birth Place: Wexford, Ireland
Father's Name: Martin Dempsey
Father's Birth Place: John Street
Mother's name: Bridget Dempsey
FHL Film Number: 256018
This is what I found I believe this to be the correct one but I can appreciate what you have said

Careful - you have two primary records (the 1901 census and a baptism record) that contradict the DOB in the one record you refer to, that's not to say it's 'wrong' but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's "correct" in respect of the Thomas Dempsey referred to, i.e. the one in the 1901 census.
It's possible that the Thomas born in 1878 died in infancy and when another son was born in 1882 they named him Thomas as well. This happened in my Great Grandparents family in Wexford when a 'Patrick' died aged 6 months in 1890 and a subsequent son born in 1897 was then also named 'Patrick'.
Judging by the 1901 census Martin & Bridget initially had children on a regular basis (approx every two years) so if they married in 1877 you would have expected them to have had a child in approx 1878 (Thomas), 1880 (?) 1882 (Thomas) 1884 (Terence) 1886 (Mary) etc.
Below is the top of the page in the baptism register which confirms that 1882 is the date of the baptism I referred to.

Hello,
Well your way of thinking makes sense
This name repition has happened within the family because my grandmother had a set of Twins called Margaret and Bridget
Unfortunately Bridget died when she was ten yrs old and another girl child born later was given the name Bridget So i can see where you are coming from
I can see that its all too easy to jump to conclusions and fit the piece of info into the puzzle so to speak
Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction :)
I will be more careful in future

Hello again
You were quite right I have found another Thomas Dempsey born 1882 to Bridget and Martin Dempsey
that date ties in with the census of 1901 and 1911 :) :) :)
Many thanks again for all your help
Its so easy to pick up on something and slot it into your tree
I will be more careful next time
