Hi Folks
I am researching my Colebrooke family ancestors, in particualry the children on James Colebrooke and his son Robert Colebrooke who held the castle between 1724 and 1774. I am aware that some of the Colebrooke family were buried under the church. I am interested in any records of the children on James Colebrooke (born between 1708 and 1729) and any records of the children of Robert Colebrooke (born between 1741 and 1775) being baptised at St. Mary's church.
Does anyone know where the parish records for St. Mary's Chilham are located.
Regards
Richard

Hi Richard
Chilham records would normally be located at Canterbury Cathedral Archives but this is closed for repair at the moment. The new Kent archive centre has opened in Maidstone
Drop them an email to check for details before visiting.
Opening times are found on the website

Hi Panda
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately visiting the record office in Maidstone is not possible at present as I live in the North East of England. Do you know if the Chilham parish records are avaialbe on CD rom or how I could find out?
Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard
I've just looked at the Kent family history society list of cds on their website but can't see chilham listed. I will be going to Maistone at some point but not sure when. If you havn't found anything out by then I will have a look for you.

Chilham baptisms 1558-1793 and 1808-1836, batch number C065551, are on the IGI.
There are several children of Robert and Ann COLEBROOK batised at Bekesbourne on Familysearch.
-
Hi Panda and Bearkat
Thanks for your replies. I have checked Family Search using the batch code C065551 and discovered an entry for a baptism of a Henrietts Williams with father Robert Colebrooke Williams and mother Mary. I have a copy of Robert Colebrooke' will and he names the mother of his children and Mary Jones formerly Williams, so I am pretty sure this is the baptism of Robert's daughter Herietta. However I have searched for the birth of his sons and cannot find any, where the father is given as Robert Colebrooke with or without Williams.
Thanks very much for your help and your kind offer Panda to search at the Maidstone Record Office. Robert is supposed to have had 6 sons named Robert Hyde (written as Hyde in his father will), Powlet Welbore, George, James and John all born between at the earliest 1741 and at the latest about 1774 I believe.
I will keep on searching.
Thanks again for your help.
Best wishes
Richard :)

Hi Richard
I too am looking for Chilham Parish records.
My understanding is that while the cathedral is closed some of the records will be available on line at findmypast, but dont know how long this will take

I've booked to visit the archives on the 26 May. If you both let me know full details of who you are researching in chilham I will have a look for you.

Hi Panda40
That would be most kind of you.
I'm looking for Charles Edwin Stacey birth registed in Apr-June 1876 in Chilham. According to freebmd he was christened Charlie Edwin Stacey.
If, as I think, his mother's name was Lucy Amelia, I am looking for his parents marriage, whom I suspect are the following:
Charles Stacey (born c1847) and Lucy Amelia Scott (born c 1848). Again according to freebmd their marriage is recorded in Oct-Dec 1868.
Many thanks

I have access to the Canterbury Marriage Index and the marriage between Charles Stacey and Lucy Amelia Scott took place at St Mildreds Parish Church, Canterbury, on 25th October 1868.

Hi Panda
I am looking for any records of children born to a Mary Williams with father Robert born from 1753 (when his first wife Henrietta Powlet died) until 1773. The fathers name should be Robert Colebrooke.
Robert married Elizabeth Thresher in 1756 and became separated from him at some point possibly by 1771. She married again after Robert Colebrooke's death in 1784.
So far I have only found a record of their daughter Henrietta baptised as Henrietts Williams at St Mary's Church Chilham on 14 Dec 1767 with parents given as Robert Colebrooke Williams and Mary Williams in looking on Family Search as advised by bearkat in an earlier on this thread.
I am still searching for a baptism record for the children of Robert Colebrooke and Mary Williams as follows
Philip Charles Colebrooke born about 1761,
Robert Hyde Colebrooke born about 1762,
Powlet (sometimes spelled Paulet) Welbore Colebrooke born about 1764,
George Colebrooke born about 1768,
James Colebrooke born about 1771 and
John Colebrooke born about 1773.
I am also trying to find a baptism record for Mary Williams who may have been born near Chilham in Kent sometime between 1723 and 1743. I do know that Mary Williams married a Robert Jones (described as a physician in Robert Colebrooke's will of 1784) presumably between the baptism of Henrietta in 1767 (or possibly after the birth of her son John Colebrooke in 1773) and 1784, which may also have taken place in Kent.
Many thanks for your help.
Best wishes
Richard

Hi Dno3,
I am afraid it is only a simple index with the names of Groom and Bride, date and Church.
Regretfully,
Tony

no worries

Hi Everyone
I went to the archives at Maidstone but sadly they only had west Kent parish records available to view. As Canterbury is closed at the moment I was hoping they would have a wider coverage available. I'm away on holiday now but will see what is available elsewhere when I get back I will keep you posted if I locate anything.
Once again sorry for not being able to give you better news

No worries Panda
thanks for your help
I am keeping close watch on the findmypast website for them to get Canterbury records. I just know that as soon as I order a certificate the information will be released on the website!
Still plenty more avenues to explore in the meantime!

I am trying to find the parents of William Henry Philpott, born about 1858.
I think his grand parents were George philpott and Sarah (nee Mepham) but I cannot trace his parents.
Ths census for 1861 is a bit confusing as I beleive it shows him living with an uncle/aunt and grand parents.
Any help would be appreciated.
-
Which William Henry PHILPOTT, Smudger? There are several and it would help to know more details ie. his wife/children.
Casalguidi :)
-
This William Henry Philpott was married to Sophia Smith in 1878 and was the father of Alexander Charles, b. 1892 .
I believe his family lived in Old Wives Lees, Chilham, Kent.
-
A possible scenario.
William Henry is the illegitimate son of Sarah Ann Philpott. She in turn is the daughter of George and Sarah Philpott baptised in Chilham on 4 September 1836.
Baptism at
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N188-QZN
The 1871 census for Faversham RG10, Piece 979, Folio 101, Page 26 has
William Hampshire 30 born Ospringe
Sarah Ann Hampshire 34 born Chilham
>>William H Hampshire 11 born Chilham
Edith Hampshire 6
Jane Elizabeth Hampshire 6 months
Sarah Ann Philpott married William Hampshire in Faversham District in the March Quarter of 1863 Vol 2a page 822.
However, the only satisfactory way forward it to get hold of (buy if necessary) a copy of William Henry’s Marriage Certificate to find his father’s name, if there is one on the certificate.
Hope this helps.
Regards, Tony
-
Many thanks, Tony - This would definitely answer why I have had the problem tracing William and why he was living with his grand parents.
Smudger
-
You're welcome Smudger. :)
One further piece of information that I have found which should be useful and that is the detail of Sarah Ann's marriage to William Hampshire.
12 February 1863 at Sittingbourne
William Hampshire, Ba - Labourer - s/o William, Labourer
Sarah Ann Philpott, Sp - d/o George, Labourer
Witnesses - James Griggs and Fanny Bedelly
:)

Hi DNo3
This is an old post so not sure if you are still here, but Charles Edwin Stacey was my great grandfather, if you are interested in swapping info.
