Hi, I've found in the Visitation of the County of Cornwall in 1620, that John Hunkin is named as the first mayor of Liskeard (though it gives no date for his mayorship). I would be grateful to know if anyone can confirm this from any other documentation.
Many thanks,
Frosty

have you tried contacting the museum in Liskeard?

Thank you, Osprey, for that suggestion.
Have just looked on the history of parliament site, which tells me that the first mayor & deputy were James Trewynnard & Henry Pyne, in 1529, and the mayors/deputies for 1536, 1539 and 1542 are unknown. So, maybe there was a John Hunkin amongst them (I know this family lived in Liskeard and were landowners there).
I also know that a later John Hunkin marries the daughter of a later mayor of Liskeard, Jane Connock. The records seem scrappy for the earlier 1500s.
Thanks again for your help,
Frosty

First Mayor of Liskeard.
I have recently come across part of my family tree produced by Rev. Samuel Vosper-Thomas of West Purley and Wimborne that suggests that a certain 'John Vosper, barber surgeon, Burgess 1575 and Mayor of Liskeard 1601 was party to a deed 5 May 1566, being a grant of Lanseaton, Liskeard. His will was dated 30 April1603, pro. Archd. Ct. Cornwall'.
Is this any help?
