Title: Lookups for the names Sealey, & Brimble of Lympsham
Post by: joody_anne on Friday 27 April 12 04:07 BST (UK)
Could someone please look up the 1861 & 1871 census for Lympsham.

Looking for James Sealey b Sep1833, wife Jane (nee Brimble Westlake) b 1834 Bridgewater, Puriton, S/Set

The children born by that time would be Henry b 1854
Edward b 1857
Could be a Walter
Frank b 1862
then for the 1871 Census
George 1864
Alice b 1867
Christian b 1870
Emily b 1872
John b 1873
Maria b 1875
Christian 1876
Ernest 1883 (he wont be there, he's not even in 1881)

I'm trying to check the authencity of the kids - I don't suppose anyone could confirm the above births?

Would James Sealey be in the 1841 & 1851 census possibly with parents - he was the eldest son of a second marriage (tho I don't know any names)

As far as Jane Brimble Westlake was concerned, I have reason to believe she came to South Australia in April 1849, but I think she returned to England and married James Sealey - is she on 1851 census unmarried?  And aged 15?  Her mother Sophia Westlake had died in 1948 - maybe she went to Henry Brimble (her father).  There does not appear to be a marriage for Sophia and Henry

Now in 1841 there is a Jane Westlake in Puriton age 7 who appears to be with a Sophia Puddy? 30 and a Matilda Linhares 15.

Could that be her mother Sophia or a red herring?

marriage James Sealy & Jane Westlake Jun qtr 1854 in Axbridge district

1851 Lympsham
Jane Westlake is a domestic servant (one of four) in the household of Peter Stephens, farmer of 220 acres.  Her place of birth is shown as Puriton (as it is on the 1871 census for Jane Sealey).

Curious but there is a marriage in 1841 Bridgewater district with names Sophia Westlake and Henry Puddy in the mix.

Could this be the Sophia Puddy on the 1841 census with Jane?

Possible for James in Lympsham 1851 little younger but born Lympsham age 13.  Parents John 51 Flora 54 so that doesn't sound like he would be the eldest son of a second marriage does it  :-\
Father born Lympsham mother born Worle.

Just to confirm what name Sophia died under, you said her mother Sophia Westlake died in 1948 (presume 1848!) and I can only see a death for the said Sophia Puddy in Bridgewater dist 1848 - this has to be the same lady does it not?  Or am I barking up the wrong tree :D

Ooops - only just opened this up.  Sorry - yes, Sophia was married (either for first or second time, as I am not sure about Henry Brimble) and was Sophia Puddy.  Will post this now and continue reading your finds for me.   Looks great.  Thank you Milliepede

Yes can confirm in the 1841 Census that you have Jane with Sophia her mother, as Jane's sister married John Linham (correct spelling) - not Linhares - obviously wrong spelling.  Matilda born in 1824

I was 100 years out wasnt I lol

Thanks GAJ for the 1851 census

And yes, Sophia Westlake and Henry Puddy married in Bridgewater Somerset on 24 May 1841 in St Mary's Church.

I'm not sure about the James aged 13 - he may have been a James from the first marriage, all I know is this James Sealey was born in - well baptized in Sep 1833and was the eldest son of the second marriage  - I don't have his parents.
My James Sealey would have been 18 in the 1851 census

I can confirm Sophia Puddy (nee Westlake) died 16 April 1848 at Mark S/Set

So who else was on the 1841 Census - just  Jane, her mother and Matilda?

Thank you re all the census information

As far as the 1861 census goes, I have Henry b 1854 - correct and then Walter born 1857 also correct.
I have no idea when Walter was born - obviously in 1859

In the 1871 I have Frank and Alice born 1862 and 1867 resp.

There are two children not there, so presumably they died - Christian(a) and Maria

James & Jane apparently had 13 children together - is there anyway I can prove or disprove their births?

Thanks again for your help.

Matilda must have been young when she married then.  Her age was 15 in 1841, hopefully rounded down a bit!
Yes looks like just the 3 females together in 1841.

The children you have listed are all on family search site but details submitted ie not taken from actual records so can't vouch for the accuracy thereof.
I'll copy them down anyway to double check with what you have.  All Lympsham and as you can see some disparity with the two Christians.

1854 Henry
1856 Edward
1859 Walter
1863 Frank
1865 George died 15 April 1870
1868 Alice
1870 Christian born 21 Feb died 21 Feb 1879
1873 Emily Jane
1877 Christian died 21 Feb 1879

Oh silly me Matilda was the daughter not the wife sorry  :D

Haven't found a Maria yet.

Looking at the 1841 again the entry above Sophia is for Richard Westlake 65 and Elizabeth Westlake 70 so maybe they are all in the same household.

There's a Maria Puddy born 1845.

Christian was registered as Christiana for birth 1876 and death 1879 aged 2.
Haven't found a Maria but Alice was Alice Maria, Emily was Emily Jane and Ernest was Ernest James.

All the children went to work at an early age as you would expect which accounts for some of them being missing from the family groups:
Henry was an apprentice shoemaker in 1871 but had become a grocer by 1891
Walter was a servant to farmer Edwin Dibble when aged 13
Alice was also a servant at a similar age in 1881 in East Brent and was later a cook in Weston-super-Mare
Emily Jane was a servant in 1891 in Weston before marrying Henry Passmore

In 1901 Ernest and his mother were living with the Passmores in Weston

Ok going a little crazy now but the birth for James Sealey in 1833 has parents George Sealey or Mogg and Rachel Hurley.

Now in 1841 Lympsham there is such a George 40 and Rachel 30 with a James aged 8 under the name Mogg.  Others in the household are Caroline 10 Mary 5 and Abraham 2.

George and Rachel married Lympsham 1833.

Interestingly in 1851 they are without James which would tie in with him being elsewhere.

George 47
Rachel 44
Abraham 13
William 10
George 6
Jane 3

Just in case this is right you never know  ;D
1851 census James Mogg 18 single born Lympsham house servant Badgworth Somerset.

I can't explain the Sealey/Mogg thing yet.

I’ll answer each question or message in turn.

Matilda is the daughter of Miriam, sister of Sophia Westlake, and was born in 1824.

1854 Henry
1857 Edward] born 1857
1859 Walter  I didn’t have a year
1863 Frank baptized 1862
1865 George baptized 1864 died 15 April 1870
1868 Alice baptized 1867
1870 Christian born 21 1870 Feb died 21 Feb 1879
1873 Emily Jane baptized 1872
1877 Christiana baptized 1876 died 21 Feb 1879

There is a John Sealey b or bapt 1 May 1873
Maria Louisa Sealey b or bapt 17 Sep 1875   <is Maria Louisa in fact Alice Maria>?
Ernest James b or bapt 23 Sept 1813
None of the above three were in your list (tho Ernest was mentioned with no date)

Maria was Sophia’s daughter with Henry Puddy.    Sophia died a few years after her birth.  Maria born Mar 1845, Sophia died Apr 1848

Yes, Richard Westlake and Elizabeth (Dunstone) are Sophia’s parents

I had two separate people – Christian (1870) and Christiana (1877)

I’ve altered Alice to Alice Maria, and already had Emily as Emily Jane, but do not have a birth date for Ernest James

Re the parents for James Sealey – I’ve just noticed I have George and unnamed spouse as his parents (not sure where I got it from tho)

Thanks again for helping me Milliepede
