Hello, would someone be able to do a look-up for me on the 1871 census for a John Fell who lived at 37 Kirk Street Calton Glasgow. Have hit a brick wall with this gentleman and would love to find him. Thank you . Carol
Names I am researching, White, Fell in England and Ferguson, Munro in Scotland. ???

I've done a search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (pay to view) and there is only ONE John Fell living in Calton, Lanark on the 1871 census. And he's 56yo, so born c1816.
I also searched the same site for his death - and only one John Fell born 1816 +/-3yrs died in the whole of Scotland during 1881-1900. Looks like your John died in 1873, still in Calton, Lanark.
So you could get his census return for 1881, showing who he was living with, then his death certificate (which should name both his parents), and if he was widowed or married, his wife's name and also the informer of his death (son/widow/nephew etc)
I'm sure you'd be well pleased if you spent just 6GBP on the website, I think!! Go on - do it and let me know how you get on !!

Thank so much KateB I will certainly do that, unfortunately I am having a health problem and am unable to do much in the way of research. I thank you muchly though and when i get back on my feet I will look for that. Have a good one. Missy

1851 index
Census taken Calton
John Fell age 37
Janet age 38
Janet age 10
John S age 8
Thomas age 7
William age 1
There's no birth in IGI for a John Fell born Carluke, getting his
death cert. as Kate suggested would show his parent's names, provided
they were know by the informant.
There doesn't appear to be a Janet Fell in 1881 census, so she may
have died pre 1881.

An unusual name, I had a look in the 19th century burial records for Cambusnethan. Only one mention there -
JANET INGLIS, housewife, Dennistoun, aged 82 years, widow.
Parents - William Fell & Janet Haddow.
Buried in plot 185, Private burial ground on 14th January 1899.
Following on from that, I found her husband and her son -
WILLIAM INGLIS, spirit merchant, Crindledyke, aged 74 years, married.
Parents - William Inglis & Agnes Tweedie.
Buried in plot 185, Private burial ground on 22nd March 1879.
WILLIAM INGLIS, spirit merchant, Airdrie, aged 45 years, married.
Parents - William Inglis & Janet Fell.
Buried in plot C40, new cemetery on 17th May 1880.

This is the same Fell connection
William Fell and Janet Haddow married 1799 at Cambusnethan parish.
They had 6 Children
One of them was Janet Haddow Fell who married William Ingles 1834
William and Janet Ingles had 10 children.
I understand there connected with Lesmahagow however it does look like they ended up in Cambusnethan.
Thanks for the info
William Fell had a child with Elizabeth Johnston called Johnston Fell
He then married Janet Haddow and had 6 children
And also had an illegitimate child with Agnes Forrest called John Fell

Sorry, " Lodger" I just noticed your search criteria for McCallum of Oban.
Bethea Fell daughter of William Fell and Janet Haddow was married to John McCallum in 1834 at Lesmahagow and moved to Oban. Are you connected to this John and Bethea McCallum if so we have information for you.

My name is Karen Fell in Ontario Canada. I am a direct descendant of William Fell b.1777 who married Janet Haddow in 1799. He came to Canada with his son Joseph in 1830's. I have shared much info with Douglas and have been researching 20 years. I also have a connection with John Fell b1814 in Carluke (mother Agnes Forrest) and his Aunt Janet White. I see many posts from people re this family and would like to know more about your connection and to share what info or theories you may have. I'm still looking for proof that this William Fell had 3 separate families and was he born in England.
Thanks, Karen

I came across a Joseph Burgess or Fell, illegitimate son of Jean Burgess, father's given name unknown, baptised 29 June 1789 in Middlebie, Dumfries-shire. He obviously doesn't fit any of the ones in this thread, but Joseph isn't all that common a name so it's not impossible that there might be a connection.

It's possible that there are different families involved - The Carluke OPR's show the burial of Janet Haddow wife of William Fell in 1850 and gives her age as 49 - ie birth around 1801 and so cannot be the same Fell/Haddow family who married in Cambusnethan in 1799
-
Yes it is the same family. William left his wife and adult children in Scotland when he came to Canada with his son Joseph. I have letters from the children who remained there to their father here in Canada. Specifically a letter telling him of Janet's death in 1850 with a lock of her hair inside the letter. She is buried in Carluke Cemetery Lair #453. I have many items that William saved in a black box and was handed down the generations to me.
His relationship with Agnes and the birth of John in Carluke is a guess. As William Fell is listed as the father on John's death record. Our family also had copy of the Speech John gave at the 7th Annual Soiree of the Natives of Carluke held in Glasgow in 1871 so I know there is a connection there. Joseph named one of his sons James Haddow Fell, my G Grandfather.
William's wife Janet was born 03 May 1779 in Easterseat Carluke (Parents John Haddow and Betty Robertson). She was actually 71 when she died. The age of 49 listed on the OPR is incorrect.
