I am trying to trace my Cox ancestry and am getting very confused, hope someone can help. I have gone back to John Cox DOB about 1677/78 in Middlesex England, However his father William Cox DOB 1648 born and died in Henrico , Virginia, US. Which means that he must have gone to England where John Cox was born then returned to US leaving John in England. Does anyone know if this can be verified?
John must have later returned to America where he died about 1730 in Henrico,Northamption, North Carolina US.
Also I have William Cox marrying Frances Hill Cheney however I cant find any confirmation that Frances Hill Cheney existed although she appears in lots of family trees. These trees have her father and mother as John Cheney and Martha Parratt however there is no Frances Hill amongst their children. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So, you've got all sorts of deeds, wills etc to verify?

No I haven't. That's where I need help. All the info that I have is from Google and Ancestry, I found information on John Chaney and Martha Parratt on this site http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/CHENEY.htm, even this info has more questions than answers. Thanks for your reply.

It's difficult to get back this far normally. I don't think you can rely on trees on the internet. Some people just pick up likely names and cobble the tree together with no verification whatsoever. And (to me) this is worse than useless.
Sometimes it's not how far back you can get, but what you can find out about you ancestors' lives that make this hobby so interesting. Things like how people lived at certain times, work, houses, furniture, clothes they wore, food they ate and how it was cooked and bought, washing arrangements etc etc. It can be very interesting. But that's just my opinion.
Just had a look at that website. I wouldn't place too much reliance on it.

Hi - I am doing the same research and have found out what you have found out - no Frances!
I have even looked at the will and she is not mentioned.
Did you find out anything more?
-
Just looking at the first part of your post
You have a John Cox bn about 1677 in Middlesex. No exact date of a baptism? No exact parish within Middlesex?
Then you say his father was William bn 1648 in US and dying also in US. How do you know this man is his father? Seems more than unlikely, nigh on impossible to me! Who were "your" Johns parents at his baptism? Have you found others with those parents in the area who are likely to be his siblings, and does that lead you to a marriage of his parents? How on earth does it lead you to a chap in US?

I agree with silvery, I learnt that you can't rely on trees on the internet. After more research I have found my John Cox. He was born in 1789 died in 1863, I am descendant via his son William born in 1822 in Ireland, however I cant go back any further. Anyone researching this John Cox?

A John COX aged 14 arrived Sydney NSW 26 Feb 1837 per Lady McNaughten which had departed Cork 5 November 1836.
If he is connected to your ancestor :
