Title: Longbenton baptism look up please
Post by: Chrislats on Tuesday 24 April 12 15:16 BST (UK)
Hi

Would anyone be able to check an entry for a baptism at St Bartholomew's church in Longbenton please? It is for a James Latimer on 5th April 1772. Father should be William, mother Isabel.

I am particularly interested in their address or any additional information.

Thanks a lot

Chris

You can read the bishops transcript of the entry on this site

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

It is page 18 of 673 under Longbenton. I can not read the address (looks like Clattering Causey) perhaps someone else will be able to read it

That could be right as there is a Clattering Causeway listed in the township of Newstead on the Northumberland farms index

see link for a link to the farms index

Thanks for that. I can't seem to find the Bishops Transcripts from that link, it just takes me to the main Family Search page. Maybe I'm being a bit thick!

I have come across Clattering Causey on the farms index before but as this is up near Bamborough I'm not sure why, if this is where they are living, the baptism would take place in Longbenton, 35 miles away.

on the bottom left of that page is a browse by section

1. click on British isles, takes you to a new page
2. on new page click on
England, Diocese of Durham Bishops' Transcripts ca., 1700-1900
3. Then click on Northumberland
4. Then click on Longbenton
5. Then page 18 of 673

Brilliant! Thanks for that. I didn't realise the Bishops Transcripts could be accessed from this site. I'll have to do a bit more exploring.

I'm pretty sure it does say Clattering Causey, but no additional information. If they were living in Newstead township shouldn't there be a note about Longbenton not being the parish of birth to avoid right of settlement?

I guess a couple of possibilities :

1. Perhaps there was a Clattering Causey in Longbenton and its just coincidence there is one in Newstead too
2. Some Northumberland parishes were split over non contiguous areas and perhaps Longbenton was one of these ( i did a quick look on GENUKI but it doesn't say this was the case but a wider search may be helpful)
3. Perhaps there should have been a note in the register but the clerk didn't put it, or didn't know where Clattering Causey was

That's what I love about genealogy, each discovery leads to more questions!

It would have been useful if it had been Newstead as the next trace of them is in Embleton, much closer than Longbenton. I'll do a bit more digging.

Thanks for all your help.

Info from Godfrey Watson's book " Goodwife Hot, Northumberland's Past in it's Place Names"....

Causey/Causeway .. built up paved road, usually over marshy land. Chattering  ....      named after the sound made by horses travelling over the road.

Other places " Clattering Houses" near Ellingham.
--------------------------------------------------------------

The "Township" of the parish of Longbenton, Killingworth, Weetslade, Walker and Longbenton itself, all bordered each other, with no outlying enclaves.

Thanks Michael, that's really useful. Probably lots of places around the country with that name.

 Chris,

I only gave a very brief extract from the book. Author mainly picked his place names because of them been in "Northumbrian" vernacular.

He states that in 1580 the road/street was called " Clatterandway", becoming known as "Clattering Causeway" by 1702.

Thanks Michael

I guessed it was to do with Northumbrian dialect. I did mean to put county not country - a case of not checking my spellings before posting!

Sounds an interesting book. I'll have to get a copy. I'm fascinated by the derivation of words.

Chris,

Published by Oriel Press Ltd, 33 Ridley Place, Newcastle NE1 8LH, 1970.
My copy was "withdrawn from stock" of Northumberland County Library. I think I bought it from Blyth or Cowpen branch.

It has helped solve many a conundrum.
