Hi,
First post here after finding very useful info from this thread - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,90305.0.html.
The paper copy of my family tree starts with my 3x great grandfather Duncan who was married to Rebecca Dennis who had a child named Daniel who is my 2x GG.
Firstly, the chaps details I have are for the wrong person and after a little bit of searching, I found the correct details. From there though is where I'm having difficulty. I have found info to suggest Duncan's parents were Duncan McGregor and Ann McEwan, however the marriage details in the link show a Hugh McGregor.
Does anyone have any further information on Hugh?
Many thanks
Scotty

Hello Scotty Mc,
Welcome to Rootschat! :)
It would be a good idea to post the details you believe to be correct (including all known dates etc), so we can endeavour to help you.
You've already realised that it's not a good idea to accept other people's research/findings as being 100% accurate unless they can be verified/cross-referenced on various types of documentation!
Statutory Registration didn't begin in Scotland until 1855, but the OPR's can be searched for prior events and of course there's always census returns.

Thanks Anne.
Giving the info I already have would be helpful somewhat!
The majority of my tree is accurate upto and including Daniel McGregor (b.1867, d.1954) and married to Julia Hodgson (b.1868, d.1902).
My tree shows Daniel's parents as Duncan McGregor (b.1850, d.1928) and married to Rebecca Dennis (b abt.1840, d.1895). However when I've delved a little deeper, this Duncan doesn't appear to be the right chap. The correct one appears to be Duncan/Donkin McGregor (b.1834 in Barnparish, Scotland, d.1887).
The problem I have is with Duncan's parents. So far the evidence suggests that Duncan's parents were Duncan (b.1800, d.1887) and Ann McEwan (b.1806, d.unknown), however the info from the marriage register shows a Hugh McGregor as his father. This has me thinking have I found the correct details, the marriage details are correct or Daniel potentially lied?
As before, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Scotty
ps. mods, if this is in the wrong section please feel free to move, cheers!

Hi Scotty Mc,
Was trying to have a look for your relatives, but cannot find your "Barnsparish, Scotland". Have you get anymore info re this parish. If you have searched IGI for the family, please advise any results.

Like Tom I couldn't find anything similar to 'Barnsparish' in Scotland. :-\
Any mention of actual addresses/villages/shires on any documentation?

I couldn't find anything regarding Barnparish either. I am just taking the info from the 1861 England census which shows himself and Rebecca living in Monkwearmouth Shore, Sunderland, Co Durham.
-
Barna Parish in Galway (Ireland)
Don
-
All of the census' show Duncan as being born in Scotland but with no place.
-
On IGI there is a marriage/banns for Duncan MacGregor & Anne MacEwan 22 Dec 1831 Kilmadock Parish Perth.
also Duncan McGregor & Ann McEwan 4 Dec 1831 Barony Parish, Lanarkshire.
It could be bride from Kilmadock Parish & groom from Barony as both events Dec same year.
-
Just found the birth of an Alexander McGregor (to Duncan McGregor & Anne McEwen) in Kilmadock, Perthshire on IGI.
Batch No. C11362, Birth: 12th February 1833, Christening 26th February 1833, still looking to see if there's any other children .....

Thanks for the help guys.
Just looking at the info from Duncan and Rebecca's marriage cert, it shows Duncan as a labourer.
Since then I have found this potential lead from the 1851 Scotland Census...
Duncan McGregor, aged 18, labourer living with siblings Peter (b.1801), Agnes (b.1820), Daniel (b.1821) and Mary (b.1831), born in Larnarkshire
or another lead from the 1841 Scotland Census....
Duncan, aged 8, parents John (b.1791) and Jinn (possibly Jean b. 1794) but with different siblings. However, this records shows Duncan as living in Barony Civil Parish.
Add these to the Duncan/Ann McEwan and Hugh McGregor, my head is a little mashed ??? :D

Back again,
I'm not familiar with English BMD's, so I don't know what info can be gleaned from them, but I found 2 deaths (and a marriage) on Ancestry which might be Duncan & Rebecca. (Scottish DC's list parents' names if known by the informant and list both sets of parents names on MC's.)
Rebecca Dennis (born c1840) died Apr/May/Jun 1895, Sunderland, Co. Durham age 55
'Donkin' McGregor (born c1833) died Jul/Aug/Sept 1887, Sunderland, Co. Durham age 54
If this is the correct couple, their marriage is listed as Oct/Nov/Dec 1856, Stockton, Durham

Yes Anne, those are the details I have found.
What has thrown me is Hugh as Duncan's father.
-
Scotty have you checked 1841 & 1851 census for Co. Durham. I don't see the family on Scottish Census.
On Duncan's marriage cert 1856 does it say if parents are deceased?
-
Hi Scotty Mc.
I am 2 x GG from Duncan who was recorded on census as being born in barnparish (no such place it seems) I will check my records to be sure but Duncans father was Hugh who is registered on Duncans marriage certificate as a shoemaker from Scotland.
-
It strikes me that 'Barnparish' sounds pretty similar to 'Barony Parish'. That is, Glasgow.
I have found info to suggest Duncan's parents were Duncan McGregor and Ann McEwan
So far the evidence suggests that Duncan's parents were Duncan (b.1800, d.1887) and Ann McEwan (b.1806, d.unknown), however the info from the marriage register shows a Hugh McGregor as his father.
What exactly is the evidence suggesting that Duncan's parents were Duncan MacGregor and Ann MacEwan?
-
Hi I hope you don't mind but it's my first visit to this site, but it seems we are looking for the same information.
I have come to an impasse with 'barnparish' looking for Duncan McGregor, did you get any further ?.
-
You can read about Barony parish here -
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/LKS/Barony
It comprises a large swathe of what is now the city of Glasgow.
I had ancestors called Thomas Welsh and Jean Ballantyne who were married in Barony parish in 1795 and I'm pretty sure that she was the Jean born in Glasgow in 1775 to James Ballantyne and Christian McGregor. Birth records for their various children make clear that they lived in the Calton area, which is fairly central but still part of Barony parish at that time.

Hi Scotty
I take my side of the family from Able McGregor,
I still cant enlighten you any further, I have recently opted for John and Ann being Duncan's (1835 ) most likley parents, even then its still a bit iffy, I too have a copy of Duncan and Rebecca's wedding certificate and this Hugh guy is a bit of a nuisance,
how ever there was a McGregor family in Hartlepool had a Hugh committing larceny in 1856, Im now wondering if the Hugh travelled down from Scotland at the same time as Duncan his younger brother ?
I know one thing it makes a right mess of my family tree when I keep chopping and changing.
Gordon (1900 - 1971) started me on this anoying trip.
