Title: Old Motherwell addresses
Post by: Drop Bear on Sunday 22 April 12 10:23 BST (UK)
Hello to all,

Could someone please enlighten me as to whether the following were actual residential addresses or perhaps they were a hostel, hospital or other.

For between 1900 & 1920;
18 Quarryhall Street, Motherwell
25 Quarryhall Street, Motherwell
25 Ellenpark Terrace, Motherwell (which in 1901 I have as Airbles Street, Ellenpark Terrace)

and in 1948;
29 Hetherwood Road, Motherwell

I require this information to establish whether or not this is where my Great Grandparents actually lived.
Thank you in advance

Liz

Could Hetherwood Road be Netherwood Road which is in the Muirhouse area of Motherwell?

Hi Drop Bear,

As Sancti has already mentioned, it will be Netherwood Road, not Hetherwood Rd. It is made up of municipal houses, a small street with a "diamond" in the centre, it's still there, a few minutes walk from where I live, I know a few people who live there.

Quarryhall Street was demolished to make way for the new Police Station, late 1960s - early 1970s I think. So the street no longer exists.
From 1900 - 1930 there would have been a mixture of 2 and 3 story tenement buildings, with a few cottages in between. It was a short street, running off the main street in the area - Windmillhill St, into Orbiston St (probably called Miller St in those days). No hostel or hospital as far as I know.
In the 1925 Motherwell directory the following are at 18 Quarryhall St -
At 18a are G. FARMER, wagon builder. AGNES BOLTON, widow. THOMAS AITCHISON, steelworker.
At 18b is JAMES LOGAN, painter.
Number 25 Quarryhall St must have been a fairly big tenement (by Motherwell standards). There are 15 householders named (this book is almost like a voters roll).
25a - ARCHIBALD BLAIR.
25a - WILLIAM NICOL, wheelwright.
25b - WILLIAM GILFILLAN, smith.
25b - WILLIAM SHARP, steelworker.
25c - JAMES McKELLAR, miner.
25c - ROBERT GILMOUR, wagon builder.
25d - D. B. FOREMAN, steelworker.
25d - ALEX COLLINS, clerk.
25d - JOHN McFARLANE, miner.
25e - MRS ANNIE HAIR.
25f - ALEXANDER PATON, miner.
25g - THOMAS NEILSON, stocktaker.
25h - MRS JAMES PRENTICE.
25i - JAMES ROEBUCK, plater.
25j - DAVID CAMPBELL, steelworker.

Elmpark Terrace was a large section of Airbles Street, made up of 2-story tenenment buildings, about 36 houses (as we call them in Scotland but apartments really). All the tenements in Airbles St were demolished in the late 1960s.

If you let me know the family name of your ancestor I can check the 1911 and 1922 directories.

Mary Fagan is interred in St Pats cemetery, New Stevenston, also mentioned on the stone is her husband Peter Farrell died 1927 interred in USA. Son Patrick died 1973 aged 71 and daughter Ellen died 5th Jan 1981

LFHS are transcribing the M.I.s for this cemetery which has a number of headstones containing the name Farrell

Thanks for that Sancti,

I have the photo of that headstone. It is a large celtic cross. The photo I have shows all that you have mentioned except for Ellen. That must have been added recently.

Thank you again,
Liz

Sorry to hijack the thread!

Lodger, are those directories available publicly?

Best wishes

Hi Rockford,

As far as I know, I have the only copies. (There may be a 1911 in Motherwell Heritage Centre but I've never seen it).

I spoke to my brother-in-law today, he was brought up in Netherwood Road and can remember the Farrells. He thinks their next-door neighbours were related to them, cousins he thinks. I will try to speak to his older brother at the weekend, he will remember more.

Again and again and again, thank you Lodger.

I cannot express how much I appreciate your help. If you receive any additional information, please feel free to PM me. From the information you provided earlier I "Google Earthed" and low and behold I found 29 Netherwood Road. I can only imagine the history that that house holds. Funny you also mentioned Orbiston Street, as that is where a fair few of my relatives moved to and also where my mother was born.
Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge on what can be a sometimes lonely journey.

Thanks Annie. You may have hit the nail on the head. My wife’s family name was Rodger and there was an I Rodger at 30 Barons Rd Motherwell in the 1982 Phone Book.
I have tried to find earlier records without luck. Any suggestions ? The name I am looking for is Alexander Rodger. Thank you.

I grew up with the younger boys of the Rodger(s) family, Jim and Drew. Their father was Alexander, quite an old man to have children my age, I think he was married twice, either he was or it may have been his wife, I can't remember now. His wife was Belle, (probably Isabel or Isabella) and her maiden name was, I think, Armstrong. Her father lived in the old tenement building on Alexander Street in Wishaw. Mr Rodger worked for the government at the Naval Stores just up the road in Netherton and, I'm pretty sure he was English. (He wasn't like the other dads in the street at all, he never spoke to us kids and certainly didn't mix with any of the adults).  Both Jim and Drew are still in the area, Drew works off-shore. They had older siblings and half-siblings, so there was a previous marriage for one of the parents. An older brother was Alexander, a strange chap, he was definitely a Rodger but there were married sisters who didn't live in the area and I don't remember them ever visiting Barons Road. As small boys we thought it odd that other boys our age (pre-teens) had siblings who were married.
Mr Rodger has been dead for many years, Mrs Rodger lived to a ripe old age, unloved by any of her children, she was still at No.30 when she died I think, Drew and his wife lived there for a short time with her but she didn't make it easy or comfortable for them. After she died the house was sold and strangers live there now.

Would you be able contact the siblings who still live in the area or maybe give me an address etc ? You could say Alex’s brother’s daughters are trying to reach them - Laura and Diane ( born in Canada) but living in New Zealand for many years. Many thanks.

Hello,
Can someone help me with information on the Russell family who owned a hardware shop on the corner off Shieldmuir  road opposite side of St Patrick’s church. My grandmother was a good friend and I would like to find out more on the family friendship.
Many Thanks
