Hi everyone, sorry if this is in the wrong place but i'm not quite sure where to put this
I'm trying to trace the origins of a family name. Stowell Marshall ( could be spelt Stawell). The name keeps popping up in every generation along with Gilbert Marshall and i'm trying to track it down. the earliest record i can find is Stowell Gilbert Marshall born 1776 dies 22/5 1837 and was married to a Mary Gilbert in county of High Ham in 1796 she dies 14th sept 1854. i'm prety limited with information being all the way over in Australia so if anyone can help or point me in the right direction it would be grealy appreciated.
Thanks
Melissa

Hi Melissa,
Have you found this yet?
Source is The National Archives:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=168-xklt&cid=-1#-1
HIGH HAM, PITNEY DD\X\KLT/1 1785-1802
Contents:
Leases for 99 years or 3 lives of 2 messes. and c.25 a. in the manor of Nethham, High Ham (Mildmay Ld. of the Manor), 1785; House late Welches and c. 3 a. and a house in the Manor of Pitney and Wearne, Pitney (The Countess of Northampton Ld. of the Manor), 1794, held by Thomas Marshall of High Ham with assignment by his executors to Stawell Marshall of Queen Camel, 1802.
I also have a Stawell Marshall in my line, born approx 1771 - but my one turns up in London marrying a Jane Smith in London in 1824, aged 53. So not the same Stawell as yours.

Hi Anna, thank you for that i haven't seen this before and i'm not sure exactly what it means lol if someone could explain it to me that would be great :) The name Stowell appears in every generation of my family so i'm sure that you're stowell and mine must be related somehow it's not a common name.
thanks again

Hi there,
Still trying to track the birth of my Stawell, no such luck yet, all I know is according to the 1841 census for Surrey, he was born out of county and that he was a widow when he married Jane Smith..
Anyway, while searching I came across the following - it could be the marriage for your Stawell's parents:
Marriage in High Ham:
Thomas Marshall and Anne Batt of Pitney married 30 Jan 1770
There are a number of Marshall's who marry in High Ham over the years, the first I can find with the name Stawell is:
Stawell Marshall married Jana Compton 27 Jan 1733/34 (I believe the old calendar was March to March so it gets a bit confusing!! but I think they married in 1734)
I have found a number of Baptisms but the dates dont quite match - so either they are not the children of the above or the dates have been transcibed wrong.
Gilbert - 17 Apr 1731
Jane - 30 Apr 1736
Stawell - 3 Oct 1737
Richard - 18 Feb 1738
Just to confuse things a bit more, I have also found a couple of burials, again in High Ham:
Jane - 9 May 1736
Stawell - 23 Oct 1743
I think the Jane above is the daughter as the dates dont add up if it was the mother.
Anyway, hope this isnt too confusing!!
One other thing, there is a village called Stawell about 4.5 miles N/E of Bridgewater in Somerset, Im wondering if even further back in time Stawell as a surname crept in somewhere and ended up as a first name in this particular family??
Food for thought :-)
