Title: Help with my searches please
Post by: Gary West on Friday 20 April 12 14:36 BST (UK)
Hi all,

My first post here but I'm sure it wont be my last.  Recently acquired an interest in discovering my family roots and started the basis of a tree.  I committed to go back as far as I can gathering as much detail as I can and quite prepared to sign up and pay for cencus records where I need to - but before this turns into a whim, I tracked this site down and hoping that getting some help will help push me along.

My first request to to ID my grandfather - I need his place of birth and date of death please?

William John West
DoB 10/01/1901
London (probably Shoreditch, Islington, Hackney)
Married 27/06/1925
Died May 1961 Stokenewington, Hackney
Buried Abney Park Cemetery.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,

For his date of death you will need his death certificate:

William J West   JunQ 1961   Hackney   5c   570

1901 census has a 2 month old William West with parents William and Rosina; also siblings Philip (7), Louisa (4) and Thomas (3).  William shown as house decorator.   Could this be the right family?  Living at 13 Matthias Rd, Islington.

Gary, decided best to merge your new post on Rosina Wright with the ongoing post on husband William West to keep all responses together otherwise people will end up duplicating searches and wasting time for info already found.

In case anyone missed my note (reply 10)- I have merged two different posts. Might be worth going back to the beginning of this thread and seeing what has been found so far (the whole reason for merging these two posts is trying to avoid anyone wasting their time repeating searches already done  ::)).

1871
John Wright/40/gardener
Harriet Wright/45
Alfred Wright/16
Henry Wright/8
Rosina Wright/2y. 9m.
All born London

John Wright/50/gardener
Harriet Wright/56
Henry Wright/19
Louisa Wright/14
Thomas Wright/3
Rosina has been misnamed as Louisa.
Thomas aged 3 is listed as son of John which would make Harriet 53 when he was born so not sure that's correct.

The ref.no. you just enter it into the search box for that decade & it goes straight to the right one.

found a birth for Anthony Wright:
St.Mary's Islington(Holloway is in Islington)
b.Dec. 9th. 1808/parents Lawrence & Mary.
+
Elizabeth/ch.1805.
Thomas/ch.1807
There's a Lawrence Wright in 1841 living alone aged 60 (ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841 so could be 64).
Occ:hawker of poultry/not born in County.
There's no sister Mary Wright as per witness but it could have been his mother.
This is not absolutely him but the I can't find any other suitable candidate.

You are welcome  :)

Possibly Susanna West was not married the only way to know for sure is obtaining birth certificate to see if a father is named

Susannah's marriage to John Chambers should indicate if she was previously married

Peter & Nathaniel West
8 Oct 1837 Bow Brickhill Buckingham
Mother Susanna West NO father named

Ebenezer Bendgio, James, Elijah & William WEST
Christened 26 Aug 1849 Bow Brickhill Buckingham
mother Susannah West NO father named

Wonder if James should be Tamer  ???

There's also this one

Pamillia West
16 Jun 1833 Bow Brickhill
mother Susanna West NO father named

Being a novice at this, I would love some direction on the above information.

Aside from obtaining childrens birth certs, I'm wondering how easy it would be to try and ID a Father or Fathers here.  Seems the Fathers name is absent from most records, including some I found independantly.

I have Peter Wests marriage records
14th July 1861 St Philip the Evangelist, Arlington Square, Islington
Father shown as John West

Given above - Susan married John Chapman in 1850 (11 years before Peters wedding) would it therefore be likely, that this is the same John mentioned on the wedding cert by used the West name to make things look less unacceptable?

Next question is - given Susan married in 1850 (John Chapman) the 1851 census shows her as HEAD and again no male reference??  Was she a 1800's bunny boiler lol!!!

EDIT:  Looks like we posted responses at the same time  :D

I can't see a baptism for a Susannah West Bow Brickhill  ???

There are a number of Susannah's baptized Bow Brickhill namely

Susannah Smith 8 Jan 1810 parents James & Elizabeth
Susannah Henman 8 Mar 1812 parents James & Charlotte
Susannah Garratt 2 Jul 1815 parents William & Elizabeth

There are these two marriages Smith to West on familysearch

Susan Smith to William West
16 Mar 1833 Wycombe Buckinghamshire

Susannah Smith to Thomas West
26 Dec 1834 St Boloph Bishopsgate London

The only way of confirming her maiden name is to obtain one of her children’s birth certificates and then obtain her 1850 marriage certificate to John Chambers which should give you her father’s name

Gary, as you have Wests in Bow Brickhill (the village is now part of Milton Keynes) you might like to go to the Milton Keynes Heritage Association site www.mkheritage.co.uk and select "View Heritage websites here" and then Bow Brickhill from the list.

Then from the options down the left hand side of the Bow Brickhill site select "Genealogist's page" and you'll see that there is a link to the WEST family.

Might be worth following that up as well as looking at the info on the site about the village to give you a flavour of where Susanna once lived.
