My wife's father Walter Charles Osborn divorced and remarried in 1930 to a Cecilia Ashdown in Croydon. Apparently they had 4 children, Margaret, Edward, Paul and Pearl, I have obtained a marriage cert and birth certs for Walter and Cecilia. Despite lengthy trawling through indexes in England BMD and Ancestry.com I've not been able to find any trace of the family in the UK Rumour has it that the family went to Australia perhaps in the 1930's. Walter and Cecilia were in Egland in 1927 and 1930, also Walter was on his own for a visit to the UK around 1950. This is all I have. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi Denis
Have you seen the notice in the London Gazette where a Walter Charles Osborn of Sunnydene, All Saints Rd, Sutton, Surrey gives notice that he's changing his name to Charles Osborn. That was published in June 1937. If the address sounds likely, it at least tells you he was in England in 1937. Dazey

Hi Denis. When you say you cannot find any trace of the family in England but you have marriage and birth certs for both Walter and Cecilia and know that they had four children there. What more are you looking for. Particularly Australia. Their deaths or any any further issue? Do you know where in Australia they lived or came to? Australia has 6 sepparate States and 2 territories, all records are kept within those states and territories. So if searching it would be a great help to know just where.
If you have the childrens birth records you would know where they were born?
You have technically broken Rootschat rules by mentioning possible living person in the children. Australia has much stricter privacy legislation than England and the policy is in place to restrict others access to personal data.
If you could let us know some more info on residence we may be able to help.
Neil

thank you Dazy999 that seems a good lead as Cecilia Ashdown did reside south of London. I will follow this up
also thank you for your comments Neil. I was not able to find births of any of the marriage children therefore not able to send off for certificates. The names were given via an elderly relative which as yet are unconfirmed. I was sent an old photo circa 1931 showing a family group the youngest child looked to be about 4 years old.
Re the Austalian bit, Walter apparently seemed to lose contact with his siblings and the rumour was that he went to Australia. I thought this might be the reason there is no English records of birth for any children. I posted on the Australian section on the faint hope there was a rootschatter member in that country had come across the name of Walter Charles Osborn at some time.
I will follow up the change of name to Charles info and that may lead towards his children's birth records
Thanks once again

Hi Denisofessex,
I am the grandson of a Walter and Cecilia Osborn and I reside in Perth, Western Australia. I have also visited "Sunnydene", All Saints Rd, Sutton, Surrey some years ago on a trip to England as this was the residence of my father and grandparents. I understand by deed poll an "e" was added to our name, the reasons of which I am not sure however am keen to explore my English family heritage. I knew my grandfather as Charles (Chas) who resided in Perth and emigrated to Australia in 1950/51 landing in Melbourne then trekking across to Perth. I am aware of a Pearl believing this to be a sister to my father however am not familiar with the other names mentioned below.
Was wondering your connection to this story?. Keen to hear more.
Regards,
Cosborne

:o Hi, im a bit shocked to see your post. Let me explain...My name is Gillian Battersby. My Mothers name was Pearl Suttle (nee Osbourn) . She recently died on 13th March this year and so it seems with quite a few secrets me and my 4 siblings NEVER knew about. lts all quite complicated, but while clearing out her bungelow we came across a few letters from the Genealogists Fraser and Fraser. As pearl was born in 1929 l was surprised that her and 2 of her siblings Michael and Dennis were born before her Dad married her mum. She never told us this, and now ive come across your post about her having a half sister im so shocked! Did she know? lve no idea but my mum was always rather secretive. l feel so sad i cant talk to her now!! Anyway, l'd love to know more so please answer and l can fill you in with so much l bet!! Her family DID move to Australia, but she stayed behind to marry our Dad Norman Suttle. They had a bitter divorce in 1969 and she had a quite sad life after that. She lived in Old coulsdon, surrey, but we all moved to Margate kent in 1975. l look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards. p's' The 4 children were not as named, but Michael, Dennis, Roy and pearl. All deceased apart from Roy in Perth.

Hello there from England. l believe we are cousins! Was your father michael, dennis, or roy? My mum Pearl was their sister. Unfortunatly she died this March aged 85. l believe Roy is still alive but has dementia. Anyway, l happened to be looking For walter Charles osborn and came across a very shocking discovery that my grandfather had another family before he married my Grandmother cecelia.!! Did you know this, did your Dad know it, because my mum never mentioned it. Our grandparents must have kept this a big secret. All too late for my mum to know now which is a shame because she had half sibling(s) she never knew about! All of them emigrated to Australia in 1952/3 but pearl my mum stayed behind to marry my dad Norman Suttle whom Charles/walter disaproved of which is quite hypocritical considereing what he did having 3 children out of wedlock!!
Any way, would so love to hear from you as l have alot of stuff to tell as im sure you have. Gill.x

Hello there, I am Gillian Battersby's sister- Christine, eldest child of Pearl Cecelia May Suttle (nee Osbourne). Mum's parents (who we Knew as Charles and Cecelia Osbourne) and her 3 brothers Roy, Denis and Michael emigrated to Australia in December 1951. I have a photo album showing them on the 'Orcades' arriving in Feb 1952. There is one address mentioned, 20, Valley Rd, Perth and later mention of a new house being built called 'Applecross '.I remember mum showing me a colour photo of nan by the Swan River. Inbetween the pages are Australian flowers pressed by nan. I remember nan and granddad visiting us in England at 52, the Glade, Old Coulsdon, Surrey. I was 10. Grandad (Walter) was dying from lung cancer and it would be their last trip back as he died the next year - 1966. I stayed with them in their rented flat and they gave me a beautiful doll and I had to sing into a tape recorder for them to take back with them. They had visited before as there are pictures of them holding me as a baby (1955), in Sutton, Surrey. I know that Uncle Roy married Gwen and they had 2 boys, Johnny and Paul. Roy and Gwen are still alive but sadly Roy is in a home with dementia. Denis married Betty, I think they had a daughter, Ann and a boy who may have had special needs. They did come back to live in England because I remember visiting them.Michael (MIck) married Lorraine in 1959 and had Clinton and Terry. When mum died recently she left me her photos as I had requested because when I was young she talked a lot about her family she had 'lost' to Australia. She always regretted not going with them and when my dad and mum got divorced she tried to take us there but we were turned down. I suspect because of her frail mental health at the time. Sadly, mum was never the same and missed her family even more then. It is so interesting to find people that are related to us. Gill and I are especially interested. We have 3 brothers, Stephen, Paul and Michael. We all live on the coast in Kent. Mum had 8 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchidren! Please contact one of us! Thanks, Chris xx

Hi Gill and Chris and welcome to Rootschat. :D
It seems that Denis has not been online for over 6 months and did not reply to the previous post by "Cosbourne". He should if still at his email address get a reminder of his post in 2012 as I did.
Should this not be forthcoming in the next few weeks you could go back to this thread and I will notify the Moderators of the Board to try and establish contact directly.
It is great to see this family reunion, if only online and I am sure you lot will have lot's to share.
All the best
Neil

Thankyou for that information. I didn't realise Applecross was a district in Australia, I thought it was the name of their house! I have a photo of Charles Osbourn;s grave which nan sent to mum. Will COsbourn get an email to say we have made contact? I am guessing he may be my cousin Clinton, Michael's eldest child.
-
He should get an e-mail to say there are new posts on this thread - if he still has same e-mail address.
And Neil will ask moderators to do some clever sleuthing if the e-mail address has changed. Sometimes they find the new e-mail address
In the meantime I am sending you a personal message about a possibility of where he works.
If you make one more post (3) you can then use the personal message system fully.
regards,
Ros

Hi Chris,
We have to be careful here to not discuss people who are still living (for privacy reasons - we have strict privacy laws here).
It is best if you remove the names of anyone who you do not know to have passed away. To do this hit the "modify" button on your post and backspace over the names - perhaps just leave an initial.
You could also try sending a personal message to cosborne. But be aware that as a newcomer he can only receive one personal message so include your e-mail address. He won't be able to reply by personal message until he has made more posts (but he can reply by e-mail). To send him a personal message click on the circle under his username with a letter/page in it.
cheers,
Ros

Hi Chris and Gill
Lovely to hear from you. Firstly please let me offer my condolences on the passing of your Mum. Well yes I am your cousin Clint, my Dad was Mike Osborne the youngest of four and was married to my Mum Lorraine Sadly they to have both passed leaving just my sister Terri and myself. We both live with our families in beautiful sunny Perth Western Australia. We too both received a letter from Fraser & Fraser about 2 years ago hence it got me interested in researching my family hence my previous post on Roots Chat. I have two boys aged 14 and 18 and my sister has 3 girls aged 21, 23 and 25.
We too had no idea that there was a previous marriage of our grandfather sounds like it's been a closely guarded secret.
Anyway would love to hear more from you, I do hope this finds you both well
regards
