I think you are going to need certificates to accurately go further back with John
Do you have him on the census ???
1851 there is John Proudfoot age 4 with Grandfather Thomas Proudfoot age 73 and Ann Proudfoot (described as daughter of Thomas) age 23. There are also 2 lodgers in the house one is Thomas Trumpet age 39 (image very faint)
HO107 1809 675 13
there is a marriage reg
Sept qtr 1851 Erpingham
on same page
Ann Proudfoot
Thomas Trumpeter
13 151
Is it possible John Proudfoot was illegit son of Ann Proudfoot
Ann married Thomas Trumpeter/Trumpett?
By 1861 Thomas Trumpett is living in Northuumberland with wife Susan? -and children Thomas age 10 Jessy age 1
Is it possible Ann Trumpett(Proudfoot) died and Thomas remarried??
Also did "your" John Proudfoot have the middle name of Thomas???

Hi Chinka,
Family Search shows Sophia Proudfoot b Salehurst, Sussex 1811
Parents Thomas & Lydia Proudfoot
Sophia married Thomas William Bailey 27/08/ 1830
I also have a Sophia b 1815 in Marsham Norfolk to Edward & Sarah
I think she is the same one who died at Blickling Norfolk in 1843
Suggest logging on to Salehurst parish records and working back.
The Proudfoots I researched originated Norfolk, then moved to Northumberland

I always had the impression that Proudfoot was a Scottish name. My Proudfoot line is John Proudfoot married Jane Thorburn, Scotland (date and place unknown). Their son William Proudfoot married Mary Nicholson and moved from Scotland to Barton, Westmorland. Mark Proudfoot their eldest son was born in Dumfriesshire fathered an illegitimate child in Westmorland married another woman, Mary Wilkinson in Haltwhistle, Northumberland was buried Stanhope, County Durham, 9 January 1852

The Proudfoots I am researching, actually my Wife's maternal line, originated in North Norfolk where there are loads of them. The Sussex ones again seem quite prolific in that area. Suggest it might be worthwhile checking out any sites for people researching "One Name" families, this is a very popular way of doing it in the USA.
Best of Luck
Eddie
