Title: George STANLEY
Post by: pickersj on Friday 20 April 12 14:52 BST (UK)
I've recently discovered that my 2x great grandmother's cousin George Stanley was transported to Tasmania in 1847 after being convicted of rape at York . George was born in Bentley, Yorkshire c 1828.  George's sister Sarah & her husband Lawrence Rockliff emigrated to Australia in 1853 & settled in New South Wales.  I would love to know what happened to them.

You can search the NSW BDM online where you will find Lawrence & Sarah's death registrations & possible descendants:

Mentions of the family on TROVE in the newspapers:

TROVE (digitised newspapers) has many mention of the surname ROCKLIFF.

I note that there is at least one other Lawrence ROCKLIFF - and possibly two others.

This looks like a Death Notice for Lawrence - the corresponding funeral notice is on p12 of the same edition of the paper.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/14500094

Perhaps the marriage of a daughter - Summer Hill is close to Petersham.

Australian Death Index:
1898, registered at Ryde NSW #7040
ROCKLIFF Sarah
Parents: James, Sarah
(Beecroft, where Gerry found Lawrence in 1895 is about 5 miles from Ryde and would have been countryside - now suburbs of Sydney)

According to some on-line public tress there were 11 children for Lawrence and Sarah!

Edit to add - sorry Merlin, I see now you have already posted some of these links etc.  I should read more closely.  ::)
Googlemap has a street view of the house in Petersham.

Back to George STANLEY

Seems he may have married twice

STANLEY   George,  ship of arrival: Pestongee Bomangee, convict references CON52/1/7 p466, RGD37/17 : 1858/748
DYNAN   Ann,    free   03 AUG 1858

STANLEY   George   Pestongee Bomangee   CON52/1/7 p457
BOSTON   Catherine   free   05 DEC 1854

The second marriage seems to have produced these children:
262554   STANDLEY F   1860
262552   STANLEY M   1862
262551   STANLEY MARGARET   1863
262553   STANLEY WILLIAM   1865
262549   STANLEY SARAH   1868
262548   STANLEY GEORGE   1870
262550   STANLEY JOHN   1873

This link has the info after he became free - the one Merlin gave will give you his convict record.

Thank you judb, it's nice to know that George may have married & had a family.  I've read the newspaper reports about George & I think if it happened now it  wouldn't even have gone to the magistrates. Thanks again

Welcome to Rootschat, wonky-donky

Pickersj hasn't logged into R'chat since 2014.  If s/he has the same email address then notification of your reponse to the thread should be sent.

Ann and George STANLEY are buried at Deloraine cemetery, and Ann,according to the funeral notice was living at Blackamoor which seems to be near-ish to Deloraine - the funeral notice has allowed 3 hours to move from her residence into Deloraine so it seems quite a trek.
Ann STANLEY, d 21 May, 1913
George STANLEY, d 25 September, 1894, aged 65

http://www.geodata.us/australia_names_maps/aumaps.php?fid=232507&f=231&name=Blackamoor%20Head

Here's the funeral notice for Ann,
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/50707394

George's Will is on-line.  He leaves all to Anne, and his place of residence at the time of the Will (1894) is Pleasant Valley, Tasmania, but he died at Blackamore, according to the probate document.

If you search the link below there are many references to George and some for Ann/e.  Their death entries are there and their marriage entry.

Hi Wonky Donky, It is the George Stanley in my tree, he's my 1st cousin 4x removed. George's father James was the brother of my 3x great grandfather John Stanley. I've got the baptism details for George's family & other bits of info if you need them. I'm so glad George had a family.

That’s so Awesome! Welcome as well - What shall we have for Christmas lunch this year? haha

Mum and I are scrolling and searching, it’s so interesting!

What have you found about your side? Do you know much about George’s history? When did he marry Ann?

Our Lawrence was a school teacher who paid for him, Sarah and 2 children to come over on the dreaded Beejapore in 1853.

Unfortunately on either the voyage or when in quarantine for months when it landed, they lost their 1 year old son named Francis Rockliff.. 😢

We’ve even found that Lawrence Rockliff’s Dad (Sarah’s Husbands Dad) was a Hero of Waterloo! (Also named Lawrence..)

Please keep in touch! Mumma says Hello Family!! x
