I know I can obtain them from the Registry Office in the area where the person was born/married/died.
But is there a central location I can get them from?
At the moment I believe they are £9.
A lot of money if you want a few Certificates.
Any chance of getting them cheaper, or having a deal for buying so many?
-
You can get them from the General Register Office (GRO) http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Birthmarriageanddeathcertificates/DG_175628
Cost is £9.25 each - no discounts!!
-
I believe that local Register Offices have now put their cost up to £10.00, usually plus postage. GRO still charge £9.25 with no postage charge.

If you are lucky, Ancestry has the parish registers for some areas on-line -- might save sending for a few marriage certificates

Hi,
I've found some Glamorgan parish registers on FindMyPast.

Mine are mostly around West Bromwich ???

FreeReg (.org.uk) has West Bromwich PR's? ;D

Not quite sure how it works. It just appears to be baptism, marriage and burial records.
I've done a search of "my" John Henry Bell (1938-1999 and married 1958 in West Bromwich) but nothing happens ???

Could this be him:
Marriages Jun 1958
BELL John H STEPHENS W.Bromwich 9b 1448
JUKES Allan T RILEY W.Bromwich 9b 1448
RILEY Lily G JUKES W.Bromwich 9b 1448
STEPHENS Joan J BELL W.Bromwich 9b 1448

...and his birth:
Births Mar 1938

Thank you Carol. I believe Joan Stephens is the one, though it's still a bit patchy.
I seem to have found the way the FreeReg works. Run out of time, will have to get back to it later

Use FreeBMD to get the GRO references (Year, Quarter, Reg. District, Volume, Page) - just as Treetotal did! ;D

Going to ask a silly question now (excuse my ignorance) but knowing these GRO references, what will that gain?
-
I assumed you wanted copies of BMD certificates?
That's why you need the references.

Thank you for that explanation. I've always obtained mine by giving details of names, dates etc ;D
-
The references quoted are from the GRO Index. If you want to obtain the certificate from GRO, and you are sure of the connection, then it is easier to give them the reference. However, if you go down the road of obtaining certificates from the Register Office, the GRO reference is of no use - each District has their own referencing system. ::) ::)

Question: The GRO indexes only give the Quarter the death occurred in, but you need the exact date of death to order the death certificate...how do I get that information?
(The one I am searching for is Frederick Lee, born 29 Dec 1857, and the Free BMD info for his death is July-Sept quarter 1944 vol. 3a page 1205)
TIA

Hi
Unless the GRO have changed there requirements, all you need is the year, the reg dist, the qtr,the vol no, and the page no, and of course the name

Thanks, Marg. I discovered I was on the county website (hertsdirect.org) rather than the GRO website.
It looks like either way I can only obtain a copy of the certificate by mail, is that correct? I would have thought these days an e-mail option would be available.
-
Hi Luhts :)
Snail mail only at present but pretty quick in my experience. £9.25 includes postage, no extra charge for overseas. When you apply online, you'll be given an estimated despatch date and I've never known them to miss that timescale. Number of days in the post will depend on where you live.
Please whatever you do, stick with GRO. Commercial sites charge far more for the exact same certificates :o
Regards,
Carol

The GRO and the local reg offices are supplying a certified copy, to supply them 'not in that format' would require a change of statute.
