Hi, I'm trying to research George Stabler (born 1825 in Mickleton, Yorkshire, England) he married Jane Harle (born abt 1838) in Auckland England and worked on the Stockton to Darlington Railway before coming to Saint Cloud Minnesota in 1863, I'm trying to find out when he died but I'm not too good with American records, I have him on census up to 1885 and then his widow in1900 but nothing in between so I'm not sure what became of him. Can anyone help?
Thanks for reading,
Dan

I don't think there's anything comprehensive online for that time period in Minnesota.
The 1894-1895 St. Cloud city directory has Jane Stabler, widow of George listed.

Hi thanks for that, narrows it down. I hear there was a great cyclone in Saint Cloud in 1886 with some loss of life and I'm wondering if he was a part of that. Thanks for your help!

The tornado destroyed most of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and also hit St Cloud. This Wikipedia article gives a summary and has some links to reprints of contemporary newspaper accounts:

Thanks for that. Interesting to read about it, I can't find his name on there but he does mysteriously disappear at the time of the cyclone, will investigate further.
Thanks again,

Do you have a death or burial place for George's wife? Maybe he's buried with her?
-
No I am not bad at English research but rubbish with American records, St Cloud took a census every 5 years and he vanishes in the 5 year period around the cyclone. I have those but no deaths etc. His wife lived on for decades after George vanishes.
Cheers for the advice!

It looks like Jane moved to St. Paul, Minnesota around 1905 and was there in the 1920 Census. She is listed in the 1921 St. Paul city directory, but is not in the 1922 city directory.
I presume this George isn't him, right? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XPDW-MXD

Guess she passed away between then. I will try and look into it, cheers!

Death records for Minnesota (1904-2001) are available at people.mnhs.org
They also have birth records for approx 1900 - 1934, but not all births were recorded.
Not all deaths were recorded in the early years, either
I seached for a death certificate for Jane Stabler and did not find one.
FYI, for death indices for other states, I use www.deathindexes.com This site will tell you if there is an online death index available and whether it can be accessed without cost.

I think the correct link is www.deathindexes.com. Very helpful site!
This looks like the death record for their daughter Jennie, with whom Jane was living - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FDQ3-5QJ Maybe an obituary or place of burial for her would provide some insight on the parents.

Thank you so much for this, just what I needed as I have no experience with American records, I will have to have a look later on,
Cheers,

Hmmm had a look through, they still seem elusive, nevermind. In answer to an earlier question from Shellyesq which I missed due to my inability to read properly- no that's not the right George Stabler, he is present on the 1885 census for Saint Cloud.... I once saw a list of people killed in the cyclone but the number of names was far less than the number of those listed killed. I guess I'll leave this for now!
Thanks again for everybody's help,
Dan
