The Westmeath War Dead has now been completed. Lookups available, also if your Soldier ancestor was listed in a Westmeath paper during the WW1 period.

I am researching my grandmother's family. They lived at different locations in Westmeath. Some time in Athlone, finally at Carnpark, near Mount Temple/ Moate area. Their surname is Balf(e). I have found it spelled both ways.

I have so far found Francis and Stanilaus ( Stanley ) Balfe in the WW I death list. They died in 1914. There are some other Balfe's ( Frank and Edward ) from Athlone living at 11 Main Street, Athlone and they are the sons of Edward and Ellen Balfe. I found them in the British Army WW I Records.

 I am unsure if they are related as I don't know if Edward Sr is the son of Michael Balfe and Julia Ganly. My grandmother ( Sarah/ Sadie/ Sally born 1883) had a brother Edward, born August 1, 1867 from what I have found so far. He may be the Edward listed as Head of Household in Athlone in the 1901/1911 Census but I am unsure.

I am looking for a Joseph Johnston, born Moate, Westmeath 25th July 1878 served in WW1.
