I want to research into Roman Catholic baptisms/marriages/deaths in England but it is not easy to find them anywhere. in particular I want to see the Manchester areas or Preston? Any ideas? I notice there doesn't appear to be RC's on the Mormon records. Would I have to contact the actual diocese of the area of interest? I would appreciate any pointers and help I can get.
Many thanks. Thombenn

Hello,
here is a link to Manchester Archives (http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/448/archives_and_local_studies/462/family_history_in_manchester/4) which has some information about Non-Conformist and Catholic Records.
Within that there is also a link to Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society which has begun to transcribe some Catholic records.
best wishes

The Catholic Record Society have published trancriptions of some early Lancashire registers. You can find some online at archive.org.

Preston area records are likely to be in Lancashire Record Office Preston. There are more RC records appearing on www.lan-opc.org.uk

Dont hold me on this but I think there is a hundred year year privacy clause on R.C. records, Im sure in our archives the latest fiches are stored behind the counter, I think its something to do with the Cathlolics updating there forms, with the aid of a readers ticket I can see the original baptism entry (1932) for my father, but I cannot see it on the fiche, I did notice though on the original entry of his baptisim that there is an entry written in ink noting that he had married my mum in dublin on so and so date, anybody know anything else about this practice?
Best wishes
Pete :)

The problem is that records of Catholic baptisms are updated by more recent references to confirmations and marriages (since the early 20th century, I think). When a Catholic marries s/he has to produce a baptismal certificate and the priest officiating at the marriage informs the parish where s/he was baptized. It's also possible there may be other private, confidential notes in those records. claytonbradley

The Catholic FHS released a CD in 2010 entitled
Lancashire Catholic Wills 1492-1894 : Index of people named in the wills of reputed Roman Catholics which covers the whole county, if this is of any interest to you.

Hi
Ancestry has Liverpool Catholic registers, Baptisms to 1906, Marriages to 1921 and Burials to 1988 at a couple of Catholic cemeteries.
I read some years ago that the Vatican instructed its Dioceses to refuse permission for the LDS to film their registers. Perhaps someone might be able to confirm that that was (and is still?) the case
A number of Scottish Catholic Parish Registers are on Scotlandspeople

Members of the Irish Ancestry Branch of Manchester & Lancashire FHS have transcribed details of baptisms, marriages and burials at several Manchester RC churches. MLFHS make them available to purchase on CD. See the bottom of this page on their bookshop site, http://www.rootschat.com/links/0kfp/ and the top of the next.
If you have lots of RC ancestors in Manchester it may be worth considering a purchase.
On the MLFHS membership site http://mlfhs.org.uk/index.php if you go to Online data at the top and then click on the Public Data link, you will see another link for their Catholic Register index. This gives you the opportunity to search the index for a name to find out if that name appears in the records that they have. It will not give you all the details, but will tell you if the name is there or not, and presumably whether it is worth purchasing the relevant CD.
What names are you looking for?

The Liverpool RC records on Ancestry were already in the Liverpool Record Office for people to view:-

Although the current Pope spoke out against the LDS, because they rebaptize people they have listed as members of their church, the latest I have heard is that individual bishops in England and Wales have been told to make up their own minds re their registers. In which case the situation may differ from place to place. I used to look at the Catholic registers of Dunkenhalgh, Lancs on the IGI, but haven't checked it lately, so am not sure if they are still on the new familysearch. claytonbradley

There is a Catholic Diocesan Library at St Walburge's in Preston and don't forget the Returns of Papists, a sort of census for Catholics, particularly the 1767 edition. It is useful as a replacement for early baptisms.

What names are you looking for?
From A PM message -
"the couple I am looking for are
JULIA HURLEY and JOHN MARTIN
I would say marriage around 1851 - 1858 and I think Manchester area,
Nothing at GRO but I am sure they would have married"
Do you have them on the 1861 census? Are they the couple lodging with the Taylor family in the St. Peter's district of Manchester? RG 9; Piece: 2928; Folio: 73; Page: 36
This couple are 26 and 22 respectively, and both give their POB as Galway, Ireland. IF this is them then perhaps they married in Ireland and that's why they don't appear in the GRO index or on any of the Manchester/Lancs sites.

Thanks to everyone who has responded, I will take all your tips on board.

Still on British Catholic Records, does anyone know where I would find Catholic records from Bethnal Green area around 1850/60?

Do you know which churches in Preston you need. I belong to the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society and we have some of the Catholic Records for Preston. If you can let me have more details maybe I can help you.
Joan :)
