Title: Australian Boer War Trooper
Post by: deeiluka on Monday 16 April 12 13:00 BST (UK)
I'm working with a friend on a History Month project about the family history of this man who was part of the  2nd Mounted Contingent from South Australia ( - the same contingent as Breaker Morant for those who know of his story.) Today a relative provided us with a huge box of photographs of the family - it's a real treasure chest, which we are going to scan for the family history room at the local library as another project.

This photograph is among them...... damaged, with broken glass that can't be removed, and obviously someone tried to glue the glass back together. I've scanned it in the hope that someone can help improve it for my friend and I. it will be greatly appreciated.

(I do have a larger file if that helps anyone.)

You folks are amazing! Many many thanks to each and every one of you.   :D   :D   :D
I can't wait for my friend to arrive in a couple of hours' time to show her the wonderful restorations you've achieved while we've been sleeping.

I'm sure the owner of the photos will be thrilled to have the restorations as well.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!

I've left it a bit late I fear - haven't been feeling too good so been languishing in front of the television the past few days.    Lovely picture isn't it -  and what a handsome young man too.

Many thanks Maggie......they are great. I'll send them off to my friend to see as well. hardest thing for us to do is to decide which one to use in our handout sheet for history week. We have three parts to each Reserve project.....a handout flyer, a new section for our Reserves book, and a power point presentation.....so we can use three different pictures.   :D

GS, Trooper Stock was a good looking young man, and a most adventurous one. Sadly he died in his early 40s, leaving his wife with a large seaside guest house to run, and four young children to raise, with the eldest being just 4 years of age.

Just for interest, here's a photo of the guest house. The wife ran it most successfully for over 40 years after her husband died, and it was a centre of social life of the times in Victor Harbor, and attracted all sorts of prominent people to stay. There is another Reserve named after it, so we're doing a project on that too.

Thanks for the thanks, Dee - I enjoyed sorting out Trooper Stock a lot.  As GS says, such a handsome man.

That looks a very impressive hotel.

Thanks for letting us have the background to Trooper Stock, Dee.  It makes for interesting reading when there is a story to go with a photograph.  Certainly as Maggie says, that looks a very impressive hotel.  Must have been hard for his widow initially, particularly with such young children; glad to hear that the venture was a success though.

Regards,
GS

Ruby was one courageous and determined lady, I think. She developed that guest house to suit each decade. It was frequently renovated and modernised inside. Unfortunately, it has long gone.   :'(

When the stories go up on our group's website some time in May or early June, I'll let you have the link\ in case you are interested in reading them.

GS....hope you start to feel much better very soon.

Dear Deeiluka,
wondeful restoration work on the photo. Do you have a name for him or the photographer?
My Great Uncle, G H Goodal was also a member of the South Aust Second Contingent Adelaide Mounted Rifles. later the 2nd South Australian Mounted Rifles when linked with the First Contingent in South Africa.

Yes, I am aware of the Morant story including the fact that in spite of being found not guilty of the murder of the Missionary, according to a man best placed to know, Witton the third of the trilogy Morant and Handcock weere guilty of premeditated and cold blooded murder. This was revealed in a letter written in 1929 to heir defence council..

If I can help with your photo at all, please let me know.
You may be interested that the Boer War Commemoration service will be held at the South African War Memorial, North Terrace, Adelaide onSunday 27th May 2012 at 11.00 am.

Information on the proposed Boer War Memorial for Canberra can be founn by googling Boer War Memorial Canberra.

Oh wow, Carolyn.   :D   :D
That's lovely.....I didn't like to ask again so soon to have that one cleaned up as well, so thank you ever so much.

It will probably be used in our Summerlea flyer provided my friend hasn't already printed it.

Hello Donald, and welcome to Rootschat.   :)

I'm sure the restorers on this thread will be very happy to read your comment about their wonderful work. The full name of Trooper Stock was Alfred Douglas Stock. Unfortunately, the photo was glued into the frame, so there is no way of finding the name of the photographer on the back of it. The original damaged photo belongs to the family of one of his descendants.
.
I will certainly visit the AWM site and have a look at the information re the proposed Boer War Memorial. Possibly they would also be interested in a copy of the photograph.

Did you see the other photograph I posted that we think is probably one taken in South Africa?

I would like to ask you a couple of questions, preferably in a Personal Message, but you need to post two more messages on this thread (or another thread) before we can use the Personal Message system.

Thank you again for posting. It's much appreciated.

May I also extend a warm welcome to Rootschat and also thank you for your kind comment on the photo restoration.  I know this will be appreciated by all the restorers.

Splendid also that you may be able to help Dee with further information.

Joan has asked me to pass on her thanks to Carolyn, and to say that she'll use the cleaned up "Summerlea" photo in the flyer and/or the powerpoint presentation.   :D
