Please help!
I am looking for Marriage details of Amy Ashton, mother of Sampson Ashton and his unknown father who it seems, like Sampson, was also an engine driver.
Sampson was born between 1834-39 in Cheadle, Stockport, Cheshire. He married Rachel Higginbottom, a Weaver, on 29 Dec 1856 at St. Mary’s Church, Cheadle. Both Rachel and Sampson were living in Brinksway in between Cheadle and Stockport at the time of their wedding where Sampson was a Fireman. Sampson died 14 December 1921, age 93 at Albert Rd, Birkenhead. Buried in Pompallier Anglican Cemetery, Glenfield, Auckland, Block C, Plot 119.
Sampson was on Electorate rolls in Christchurch 1880-90 and in Greymouth, West Coast 1900 - 14, and in Waitemata, Auckland 1919. In 1841 census of Bulkeley, Cheadle, Stockport, Cheshire there is an Amy Ashton, born 1811, mother of Sampson, born 1839. In 1851 census of Hayfield/Dinting (near Glossop) a Sampson Ashton, age 14 (born in Stockport) is living with Grandparents William Clayton & Deborah (age 65 & 64), but this seems unlikely to be him as this Sampson was born 1837/9.
Deborah was born about 1786 in Glossop, Derbyshire/ Bretherton, Lancashire & William born 2 Oct 1786 in Chinly, Derbyshire. They also had a son named Sampson Clayton. Neither of their two daughters could have had Sampson Ashton as they didn’t marry an Ashton. It is most likely Deborah may have been an Ashton before marriage, but this needs more investigating.
I have also found 3 other Amy Ashtons of Stockport area, one born about 1790 in Hyde, Cheshire who married William Ashton, another who was born abt 1854. An Amy Ashton also married Orlando Hague in 1840 at St Marys, Cheadle.

ERm why do you not start with the birth certificate relating to this 1841 census entry?
"In 1841 census of Bulkeley, Cheadle, Stockport, Cheshire there is an Amy Ashton, born 1811, mother of Sampson, born 1839"
what parental information was on the 1856 marriage, and what names witness?
-
In 1841 census of Bulkeley, Cheadle, Stockport, Cheshire there is an Amy Ashton, born 1811, mother of Sampson, born 1839.
In the 1841 census relationships were not stated - Amy & Sampson are in the same household, not necessarily mother & son. Also for those age 15 and over ages were rounded, so her given age there of 30 means 30-34 so birth roughly 1806-1811. As Sampson was stated as 2 that is more likely to be accurate (always allowing for faulty memories, transcriptions etc).
As you refer to "unknown father" was the father's name left blank on the 1856 marriage certificate?
The birth found by rosie99 is listed on Cheshire BMD as Sampson Clayton, mother's maiden name Ashton, so looks a strong possibility to me for the 1841 2 year old child - the certificate would tell you if the mother was Amy.
I'm inclined to think the 1851 census you found for a 14 year old Sampson is him - especially in view of the birth registration. Ages can be inaccurate - some people were innumerate, some deliberately misstated ages for their own reasons, errors were made in transcribing from household schedules to the enumerators (those we see) - there are often discrepancies.
I agree with Rosie & Pauline & suggest purchasing the birth certificate - at the moment I can't see that you've established the name of either of Sampson's parents, so this should help.
-
Do you have a copy of Sampson and Rachel's marriage certificate?

Sampson was born between 1834-39 in Cheadle, Stockport, Cheshire. He married Rachel Higginbottom, a Weaver, on 29 Dec 1856 at St. Mary’s Church, Cheadle, Glossop, Derbyshire.
This does not make sense
Was the marriage at St Mary's Cheadle Cheshire or at a church in Glossop Derbyshire?
It cannot be both Cheadle & Glossop as they are some 15-20 miles apart
-
It's St Mary's Cheadle.

Wow!!! Thanks so much to everyone for helping, what a wonderfull surprise after work :D The 1851 Census of Dinting, Whitfield, I previously mentioned has only Sampson Ashton mentioned on the original record. On the transcript there was Sampson Clayton mentioned! Perhaps Sampson was born a Clayton! Did his mother in fact have an illegitimate child to a Clayton and this would in fact make this family's connections make more sense? Was the marriage at St Mary's, Cheadle with Orlando Hague in fact her? But wouldn't it be mentioned in the census of 1841!
As to the questions about marriage cert...yes I have outlined the details except it says he was born and married in Chessel/Chissel, Lancashire on his Death Cert also. I have yet to find his birth Cert so hopefully this Sampson Clayton is in fact my ancestor:) In the 1841 census of this Clayton family there was a Sampson Clayton born in Chinley, Derbyshire in 1811! Is this his father???
Just found John Wild & William Sultcliffe were the witnesses on marriage cert.
Also Marriage of Wiliam Clayton & Deborah Hawley in Macclesfield on 4 Jan 1808.

I think you really need this birth certificate, if only to eliminate.

(Dumb Question :-[)
-
Sampson mother maiden name was: Ashton according to CheshireBMD it looks like Amy died in 1841 aged 32 as "Amy Ashton", so a marriage may not have happened or had been annulled.
-
;D Thanks so much folks!! Will look into these leads and get some certificates. Finally unlocked this family mystery hopefully! Grandma and I have been puzzling over this one for a long time and I'm sure she will be happy if it all turns out true.
Best wishes to all!

Great news for those who are either related through the Clayton family or descendents of Sampson Ashton!
I have received the Birth Cert of Sampson Ashton and the Death Cert of Amy Ashton. I'd like to share this new discovery and potentially finalize this post.
Sampson Ashton was born 1 Feb 1839 in New Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport. His parents are Sampson Clayton (a block printer) & Amy Ann Clayton (nee Ashton). As for their marriage I cannot seem to find this anywhere if anyone can help. However, this brings us to the next certificate of his mother Amy.
Amy Ann Ashton, wife of William Ashton (a painter) died of Consumption at age 32 on 17 Aug 1841 at Wellington Road South, Stockport First. Buried Cheadle Edgeley (Methodist) on 20 August 1841. The Methodist/Wesleyan Chapel on Edgeley Road Stockport is now a Buddhist meditation centre, no sign of any gravestones. Very mysterious!
Close calls & mishaps:
1) William (gardener) & Amy Ashton are in 1841 Census of Hunt Croft, Werneth, Hyde near Stockport.
However their ages differ greatly: William, 54 and Amy 50 (!?)
2) Amy Ashton (Visitor) in 1861 census of Heaton Norris, Stockport age 70, birth in Hyde.
3) Amy Ashton Buried 22 Feb 1877 at St. George, Hyde, Cheshire, Age 85 (born 1792) &
4) Amy Ashton Buried 26 Nov 1878 at St. George, Hyde, Cheshire, Age 81 (born 1797)
5) Amy Ann Ashton Married John Wild on 17 Jun 1849 at ? Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire.
6) Amy Shawcross(single) & Thomas Ashton's (Intended) Marriage on 11 Sep 1809 at St Marys,
Cheadle, Stockport
7) Emy Mottram's Marriage to Thomas Ashton 19 Oct 1818 in Stockport, Cheshire (...)

The Amy Ashton death in 1841 is the better match to Sampson's Granny than his mother.
You are the only one who can see the figures on that; is it clearly and absolutely a 3 and not a 5?

Amy Ann Ashton, wife of William Ashton (a painter) died of Consumption at age 32 on 17 Aug 1841 at Wellington Road South, Stockport First.
The death was probably at Stockport infirmary
William ASHTON ( Painter) can be found on the 1841 census at H107 113 6, Wellington Road South
The enumerators patch started at Wellington Road Bridge, 'up' Wellington Road South right into Greek Street ( the hospital is at this junction) to King Street then Daw Bank ( now the bus station) back to the Bridge!
( Wellington Road South is the main road, A6, running through the town with mixed property along its route, some is still there to day, terraces!

I wonder if William Ashton and Amy are the parents of Amy who gave birth to Sampson. :-\ He could possibly be illegitimate and when he gave his fathers name at marriage he used that of his grandfather.

Well something that puzzling wouldn't surprise me at this stage. Sampson Ashton's origins have always been very much a mystery and it may have been why they moved around the area so much and perhaps why he left with Rachel Higgenbottom and their son Thomas Henry to live in New Zealand.
Do you think that its possible the William Ashton mentioned on Amy Ashton's Cert is more likely her father who's wife was also Amy. There must be a Marriage of her parents and her birth record from 1809?
By the way, I also have researched Sampson Clayton's family in the mean time. If anyone is interested I could add the info. It seems likely that they are descendents of Ralph Clayton & Helen/Ellen Swan Married 7 Apr 1729 in Hartington, Wirksworth, Derbyshire who moved to Stockport / Glossop area.
Also have Rachel Higgenbottoms ancestry back to James Higginbotham of Glossop who Married Hannah Beard of Glossop on 6 May 1739. Atleast, this lineage is assuming the family were attending St Mary`s Independent Chapel Charlesworth and were residing in Glossop the whole time.
-
Before you go any further, I think you should look at the marriage entry for the marriage of Sampson CLAYTON to Ann WATERHOUSE in 1846.
This will show his status at the marriage, i.e Bachelor / widower, once you know this you can then deal with either looking for an earlier marriage to an Ann ASHTON, or speculate that Sampson maybe illegitimate, ..... I think this is unlikely as he was taken in by grandparents
-
Hi I got your message in my post the other day SAMPSON ASHTON married my great x 2 grandmother Elisa Sarah's sister Rachel , their son Thomas was left behind with her sisters till he also emigrated later on. I have a little on the Clayton's somewhere that I looked up many years ago which I will try and dig out....not sure where I put the stuff when I moved a couple of years ago .... I am also in contact with some of Rachel and Sampson's descendants in New Zealand (also on Facebook)

Sampson Clayton Marriage (/Intent?) Jul-Sep 1855 in Hayfield, Glossop (7b,pg789) (most likely Sampson Ashton & Rachel Higginbottoms intention to marry in Rachels home town!). They married on 29 Dec 1856 at St. Mary’s Church, Cheadle, Cheshire. Both Rachel and Sampson were living in Brinksway, Stockport at the time. Their first son Thomas Henry Ashton was either born/bap Jan-Mar Qtr 1857 in Stockport &/ born/bap Jul-Sep 1857 in Glossop. They left him with the Higginbottom sisters in Glossop however and in the census' he was said to have been born in Glossop.

Have been slowly wading through all the William Ashton Census records. The most intriguing is the
1841 where he is also a Painter (like Amy Ashtons death cert). They were living seperately, he in Macclesfield, Stockport, about 12kms away for Cheadle. Strangely he was living with 15 yr old Elizabeth Wilson & his apprentice John Beswick who's age I cannot read.
1851 Census, assuming he's the only single one, was living in Cheadle, Stockport with his sister Ann & niece Fanny as a cotton mill manager born in Stockport.
1861 Census, assuming he's the only single one, was living in Heaton Norrris with his sister Ann (age 63) & brother Joseph (age 67) as a gas regulator manufacturer born in Stockport.
Can't find any that say he is a widow however because he is always head of household. It is entirely possible that he remarried and changed profession after Amy's death. There is one census of Cheadle where he was living with John & Sarah Toping and married to his daughter Elizabeth with John's grandchildren Joseph (age 6) & William (age 4). William is a factory hand & they married in 1849 in St Mary, Cheadle, Stockport.
Other marriages before 1851 census:
1841 ASHTON William BILLINGTON Martha Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1841 ASHTON William WHITTINGHAM Alice Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1843 ASHTON William PINDAR Jane Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1844 ASHTON William Marvel HOBSON Catherine Stockport, St Mary Stockport
1844 ASHTON William BARLOW Sarah Ann Cheadle, St Mary Stockport

There is also a marriage of a William Ashton to Ellen Carr at St Michael's Church, Mottram in Longendale in 1843.
There are 4 marriages at St Michael's Ashton Under Lyne
Jenny Ashworth 1848
Catharine Bardsley 1851
Emma Grantham 1851
Sarah Wood 1851
I can check the records for these this week if you want.

Just to chip in....
Ref the above at H107 113 6, the address is given as Wellington Road South! The main A6 out of Manchester passing through Stockport it is known as Wellington Road North, when it gets to the area of Stockport Town Hall / and where Stockport Infirmary and Greek Street was, it becomes South, so William ASHTON as above was living in the area!
He is in the household with a John BESWICK app painter age? and Elizabeth WILSON 15 FS, Female Servant or Domestic! Neither was born in the county ( Cheshire )
Living at H107 113 13 in the household with widow O'KELL and child was Amy ASHTON a cotton power loom woprker, and and baby 'Sampson' The address is given as Larkhill, This is approx 1.5 miles frOm where William is!and off Brinksway. Amy dies at Wellingotn Road so she was likely to have been in the old Infirmary, the hospital was relocated some 10 years ago!
If you use maps.google.co.uk, type in the place name you will see them,.

Wow, what great news!!! Thanks so much for everyone who has been helping!
I Have found the Electoral Rolls of Cheshire and William Ashton recorded living at Wellington Road South #'s 96, 98 & 100 between 1843 till 1857. Assuming he died after that I found a Burial Record from Stockport Municipal Cemetery where he was buried 3 July 1858 and its estimated from his age that he was born in 1809. His Will confirms William, the painter, left his Estate to Ann, Samuel & Eliza Ann (of 3000 Pounds - proved 13 Aug 1858).
William Ashton Baptism/Christening on 26 Oct 1809 at High Street Presbyterian, Stockport, Born 03 Sep 1809; Father's Name: Samuel Ashton Mother's Name: Sally Booth.
In 1861 Census Ann Ashton born in Proprietess of Houses & Landed Property. She is living with their kids: Samuel (12) & Eliza Ann (10), her father Thomas Johnshon (80), sister Harriet Blackwell (55) & Ann Hearsley (servant).
In 1871 Census Ann Ashton born in Marton, Cheshire abt 1815. Living with her son Samuel Ashton (22), sister Harriet (66) also Marton, Cheshire, Fanny Haken (28) (servant).
Update: Found children baptised to William Ashton & Amey Beswick at Orchard Street/ Churchgate Independent, Stockport:
1)George bapt 18 Nov 1832,
2)George born 14 May & bapt 10 Aug 1834,
3)Sarah Ann born 14 Feb & bapt 20 Mar 1836.
I'm interested in finding his 1st wife Amy's marriage and their birth records if possible... can't seem to find anywhere ???

Hi "elzabels'
Thanks for the research you've done, you are very right about all the bits and pieces ;) I've ordered William Ashton the painters will.
Proprietess... looks more like proprietejs! ha ha! But I can see you are right.
Would be fantastic if you could take a picture of the gravestone!
How does one find cemetery records online other than "findagrave.com"? In Christchurch our libraries have online records, many others are online too, which is very handy for research. Our Parish BDM's are also online which makes it very easy to order certificates and find more info about ancestors.

I think I may have found a possible solution for Amy Ann Ashton, mother of Sampson
Amy Ann Ashton married John Wild 17 June 1849 at Manchester Cathedral.
John Wild? wasn't he a witness at Sampson's marriage?
You will find the marriage details on Family Search Records and Lancs BMD. I can't see a father's name for Amy so it would mean buying the cert or perhaps if you place a request on the Lancashire board someone would look it up for you.
Take a look at the 1851 census HO107 Piece 2156 Folio 86 Page 8.
There you will find Amy b1809, power loom weaver living with husband John, his mother and sister at Bow Garretts which is very close to Larkhill where she was living on the 1841 census.Amy gives her place of birth as Eyam, Derbyshire.
You can follow her through to the 1881 census still living in the same area
Have Fun,
Pat

Hello, My grandmother was Sarah Anne Ashton, daughter of Sampson and Rachel, I would appreciate anything that someone might have that would lead me back before Sampson and Rachel -- Many Thanks Ted
-
Hello Arron,
Yes I guess we are related, I was born and live in New Zealand and have spent about 20yrs searching for records of our extended family, however the last ten years I have done nothing more. I was contacted by my Grandfathers, Brothers, Grandaughter who I have never met as she was searching the same line and looking for details of Sampson Ashton. This lady lives in the UK and is a retired Radiographer. Her email started me thinking about this and I found your chat on Rootschat a site I have never used before and It took me a little while to work out how to answer you.
Details of Sampson are very scarce and I have no living relatives with any interest who I can ask.
I do not subscribe to Ancestry.com but did use the site in the early days when it was free and also used Genealogy.com in that way.
I have found the LDS site very usefull as well.
Thanks for your prompt reply. Kind Regards - Ted.
-
Pleased to meet you Ted, this family has been extremely hard to unpuzzle. There are many people with similar names in the area from both the Ashton & Higgenbottom family. I think it comes down to how you wish to interpret all the findings in this post because one could really pick any option. My opinion is that Sampson Ashton was the son of Sampson Clayton and Amy Ann Ashton. What happened to his mother is another story and why he apparently changed his name is another mystery altogether. However, what we do know is Sampson & Rachel Higgenbottoms first son Thomas stayed in England with Rachel Higgenbottoms family (sisters) in Glossop. Best wishes, Aaron

There was a Sampson ASHTON arrived in Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand, on the Clontarf, 15 Sep 1859. He joined the Old Colonists' Association on 17 Nov 1921, at that time living in Albert Road, Northcote Point, Auckland.
He stated in his application form that he was born in Lancashire in 1828 and arrived on the Clontarf in 1857. However, the Clontarf did not come until 1859 - and he and an Alice ASHTON are shown as aged 22 & 21. This is 10 years younger than he was, or the hand-written manifest has been misread. However, assisted immigrants had to fit certain criteria and often "adjusted" minor details like age.
In the 1881 electoral roll Sampson was a labourer living in Creyke Street, Christchurch. In the 1893 and 1896 Electoral Rolls Sampson (labourer) was living with George (a cooper) at 36 Creyke Street, Christchurch. In 1911 he was a miner at the Moonlight Mine in Greymouth.
-
Thanks 'rip 1944' for the leads on the Old Colonists Association. Are these records held at the Auckland Library? Just about to head there next week and would be great to have a look for it. Many of the details of his life I believe were fabricated. His age changed more often than any other person I've ever researched.
Found this book on the Clontarf's two journeys to be very interesting & informative:

Auckland “New Zealand Herald” Obituary:
Sampson Ashton 1828 - 1921 who lived under the reign of five Sovereigns:
George IV 1820 - 1830
William IV 1830 - 1837
Victoria 1837 - 1901
Edward VII 1901 - 1910
George V 1910 - 1936
died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Rachel Hayson, Birkenhead, on Wednesday 13 December 1921, after a brief illness. He was born ninety-three years ago at Chissell, Lancashire, England. He was in the service of the N.Z. Railways and considered he was one of the oldest locomotive drivers in N.Z. He was employed as engineer on the San Prisco mail steamer City of Nebraska in the early Auckland days, and in a similar capacity on the old H.M.S. Challenger, which made a scientific expedition to many parts of the world. “H.M.S. Challenger Expedition a famous British expedition, to study physical and biological conditions in deep sea. 1872-76 Results fill 50 Vols.” He recalled an occasion when he drove the locomotive on which the late Queen Victoria journeyed from King’s Cross to Liverpool. The Queen remarking to him in those pioneering days of the “iron horse” that he was a young man to hold such a responsible position as driver of the engine. After retiring from the railways 30 years ago he developed an enthusiasm for prospecting for gold, and for long periods he prospected alone on the alluvial deposits of Moonlight Creek and at Ahaura, near Greymouth. He was a warm admirer of the late Mr R.J. Seddon whose old age pension scheme he estimated as a considerable blessing to the old folk. He resided at Birkenhead from 1915 and his wife predeceased him fifteen years ago. Mr Sampson Ashton is survived by 3 daughters: Mesdames Alfred Hayson and Fred Pugh senr, of Birkenhead, and Mrs Agnes Williamson of Christchurch, two sons, Mr Thomas Ashton, of Western Springs, Auckland and Mr George Ashton of Christchurch, and a large number of Grandchildren and great grandchildren. The interment took place at the Birkenhead Anglican cemetery yesterday afternoon, the Rev. J. Lawrence Greer performing last rites.

Hi Aaron: better than that:
Go onto the Auckland Library website and search for NZMS 493 here: http://goo.gl/t4xyt you can download a pdf copy of the actual register.
I am currently working through it to transcribe it better than that already offered and have had some valuable finds.
And thank you for your further insight.
Cheers
Robert
