Title: Archibald Lauder b.1814 Glasgow to Otago
Post by: jewelz on Sunday 15 April 12 09:04 BST (UK)
I have no luck locating the passenger list for the  ship "Arawa",  which in 1863 sailed from Glasgow for Otago, with the following passengers aboard: Archibald Lauder a Carpenter and his family consisting of his wife Sarah, sons James a Baker, Robert and Archibald and daughters Catherine, Mary, and Sarah.

I am not 100% sure if the name of the Vessell is correct, but would very much appreciate any help to locate the passenger list for the ship the Lauder family sailed on.

cheers

Hi jewelz

The 1863 vessel would seem to be the "ARIMA" (from Glasgow) which arrived at Port Chalmers on 20 March 1863.

Unfortunately though there doesn't seem to be a (full) passenger list available.   :(

I've tried all the usual shipping / passenger list pages, to no avail.

Archives New Zealand don't appear to hold a passenger list though do have some correspondence relating to "the Otago Immigration officer reporting the arrival of the "ARIMA" - 25 March 1863".   Whether this contains names of immigrants, is unknown ?  Maybe it's worth contacting them ?

Jewelz ... I also looked at the Otago newspapers of the day.

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

The "Otago Witness" was at that time only published weekly, but its edition of 21 March 1863, missed reporting on the ships arrival.

The "Otago Daily Times" - 20 March 1863 - page 4 >> listed only a handful of the "ARIMA's" cabin passengers  :(  ... but does carry an article or two about the voyage.

Looking on the NZ Bound website I see there is a James Lauder travelling  from Glasgow and arriving in Otago on 27 April 1860 on the ship the Storm Cloud.  Someone called James Lauder (the only James Lauder on the Historical BDM site death index with no middle name) dies in 1880 aged 64, giving him an aproximate birth year of 1816. Is this possibly a relative of the Lauder family, perhaps a brother to Archibald?
Craig.

Thanks so much for your help guys,
Yes the Arima looks like the correct ship. I have found the articles about the Arima thanks Lu. Makes it so much easier to look up when you have the correct info!

Did find this entry, where Sarah Lauder, Archibald's wife is mentioned

I believe there were three James Lauders
1. Our James was a baker in the 1851  and 1861 Scotland Census
New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981
1880 -1881  Age: 46 Residence   Mataura, Southland, New Zealand    Baker, next on the roll to Archibald Lauder Tois Tois, who has a house on J Mcintosh's, husband of Catherine Lauder,

He was alive at his father death in 1899 but seems to disappear after that.

2. A tailor who I think might have been the James Lauder(Dunedin Electrol Roll) on the Storm Cloud, as the is no mention of a baker.

3. A Farmer, for who I have the death cert you mention in 1880, but his parents were Adam Lauder and Mary Laidlaw and Spouse Jane Wishman, Born Kelso(not our family)

Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to look into this for me your efforts are much appreciated.

Cheers
Jewelz

Thanks for the new info Signal

I believe Archibald Lauder was born as that, using the mothers maiden name a second name wasn't common  back in 1814. He probably took his mothers maiden name later in life as it appears on his death cert in 1899.

Archibald(senior) appeared in 1841 with his first wife Agnes(Janet) and sons( who I am struggling to find). It is possible they had second names but Robert who is the only one I can find a death for in Invercargilll (have also tried LANDER) did not. His Children from his next marriage to Sarah Stewart, all do have second names see below

They appeared in the: 1841 Census

LAUDER Robt M 1 Midlothian

Agnes passed away shortly after the birth of their last son George in 1842. Archibald next married Sarah Stewart on 26 Nov 1842, at Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland. Sarah was born on 20 Sep 1814 at Perth, Kilmarnoch, Scotland. They lived at Yardhead, Leith, Scotland where their children, Catherine Wilson, Mary McKenzie, Sarah Stewart and Archibald Wilson were born.

Archibald Wilson Lauder son of Archiibald Lauder who farmed at Toi Tois( Fortrose )married my great grandmother Elizabeth Wedge, widow of George Wedge(1860-1890). The Lauders lived at Woodlands Southland prior to moving to Invercargill. Elizabeth had 3 children from her Wedge marriage, the youngest George changed his surname to Lauder by deed poll. He was a carpenter and a sapper in WW1. George d 1961 Dunedin. Archibald & Elizabeth (nee Cossgrove) had 4 children Wilson Archibald Lauder b1894, d 1944 of T.B.,Oliver Stewart Lauder b 1896 died Battle Messines Ridge WW1,Herbert Pickens Lauder b1901 died 1922, & adopted daughter Ada Lauder b 1903 d 1954 m1928 William Wallace Tinnock.Elizabeth was active in the Salvation Army. She & Archie took in many foster children. My father (the son of Elizabeth's eldest daughter (also named Elizabeth Wedge)was named James Oliver in memory of his uncle Oliver Lauder and his brother was named Wilson Archibald. The headstone is where Archibald Wilson Lauder is buried at Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.George Wedge/Lauder married and had 4 children.
Hope some of this is helpful. LETZNZ

Thanks for the snippets guys.
I did not know Ada was adopted so must add that to my records, thanks.

I see you have a copy of the Gregory Family history :) but believe their arrival on the ARAWA should have read ARIMA,  I have since done some research on the Lauders arrival in New Zealand and it seems that: on 25  Jun 1864,  Archibald Lauder, and his family (sons James, and Robert - not located Walter to date - from his first marriage also came to New Zealand, where James continued his trade as a baker, while Robert worked as a rabbiter),  sailed from Glasgow, Scotland for  Bluff, Southland, NZ, arriving 21 Sep 1864, (not 1863 as stated in the  Gregory Family Book) on the second voyage of the "Arima".
Sarah Lauder nee Stewart's Death notice seems to confirm the year of arrival, does the arrival of the goods, ex ARIMA for Sarah Lauder, Southland Times, Volume I, Issue 56, 8 October 1864

Southland Times , Issue 11938, 8 January 1892, Page 2
Fortrose. There passed away rather unexpectedly on Christmas Eve one of the old settlers of this district in the person of Mrs A. Lauder, who, with her husband, has been residing in this district for the past 17 years. They came to the colony 27 years ago and first of all settled at Morton Mains. Only a fortnight before her death the golden wedding of the aged couple was celebrated. She leaves a large family, all grown up, 26 grandchildren (25 of whom followed her to the grave) and 2 great-grandchildren.

Can forward you a PDF copy of what I have put together on the two voyages of the ARIMA to New Zealand, if you would like to send me a PM with your email.

The James that died at Mataura on the 10th Jan 1880 was the son of Adam Lauder and Mary Laidlaw
whereas our Archibald Lauder d. 1 Sep 1899 was the son of William(James) Lauder and Catherine Wilson
so it is not possible that they were brothers.  :-\  I do have the death certs for these two also if you like a copy.

cheers Jewelz :D
