Have access to Auchterderran school records from 1900-1920's.
Cost me a lot of money so want to share with anyone I can
so it's not a waste. Anyone with an ancestor in Auchterderran
that would have gone to school around this time please ask
for look-up.
Thanks
Elaine

Hi Elaine

Sorry no Angus. If these are of any use, give me your
email address and I will send the original documents
of site.

This is a great play of fate here Elaine! Only a little village, but Ive alot of rellies there. Could you please look up any Herd's in the school there?
Regards matthew :D
-
Hi Matthew,
You and me both! I was related to half the village when I
was growing up and still have many family there still.
William Herd
DOB: Feb 15th 1890
Father: James Herd
Address: Whitehall
Last school attended: Auchterderan primary school
If you send me your address I can send you the original
document instead of typing all the info out. There's
probably a lot more.

Hi Elaine,
Just wondering if you have a Frank Hird in your school records. I know he is from that area just not too sure where. Really stuck finding that part of my family.
Many Thanks
Tara
-
Hi,
Are you sure it is HIRD and not Herd. I can't find a Frank Hird
but plenty of Herd's.
Elaine
-
Hi Tara, I have Herd's all over Auchterderran and surrounding towns and villages. What branch of the Herd family do you belong to?
regards
Matthew
-
Hi Elaine,
Thankyou for looking for me. It is Hird as far as i know. Also thankyou to Matthew. What it is, is my great grandad and great grandma eloped to England. He was from Scotland and she was from Ireland. Both families disowned them. She was going to marry below her. All i really know is that he was from the Fife area. Born 29th Nov 1895. On their wedding cert. he says that his father is called Thomas and he is deceased. They got married in 1923.
So if this rings any bells in family history i would be grateful for any help.
Many Thanks
Tara
-
Hi Tara,
I had a quick look at the 1881 census for Fife to see if there were
any HIRD's and there isn't one. There are Thomas Herd's, but no Frank's.
Actually there's no HIRD's at all.
Following the naming patterns it would be expected at least one other with
that name. Another tip is that Frank or Francis is an
Irish/Catholic name. Not always of course but often. His
family may also have been Irish.
The best thing you can do is go to Scotlandspeople and find his birth
cert. With his date of birth and father's name it shouldn't be too
difficult. Once you get that, your puzzle will start to fit together.
We all seem to have someone in our family that is a mystery! I have
a couple too!
Good luck
Elaine

Is there a record for Peter Cochrane Fearns or Ferns
-
No
-
Are there any Ferns or Fearns mentioned?
-
It would be of interest to me to know if there are any bearing the Welsh surname in your school records. My great grandfather left Cardenden before 1890, in his early thirties, but the rest of his brothers and sisters remained in the area, some descendants, mostly not called Welsh anymore, as seems mostly daughters stayed on, in Auchterderran to this day. So I might get some complimentary information to lines I have followed from his siblings, even if my own line will be missing. Cheers

Very many thanks for this information. You said I didn't say who I was, and at the risk of sounding over-the-top, I'm Tom Welsh, son of Tom Welsh, son of Tom Welsh, son of Tom Welsh, who was the brother of John Welsh (Cardenden Row and Summers Place in your information), both of whom were sons of Tom Welsh and Mary Summers in Old Row, Cardenden. I am in touch with John's descendants so can pass on. Of the other brothers there were Alexander (descendants still in area), James (no contact with descendants), Andrew (who built Summers Place, still descendants in area), George (still descendants in area) and David (died unmarried), and nearly as many daughters likewise. Tom Welsh, who married Mary Summers, was born in Cluny, son of Alexander there, apparently son of Thomas, last miller in Cluny (the IGI gives wrong ancestry for Thomas who married Mary). So although three generations removed from Cardenden I have roots there. But that string of information may be useful to some who have links with that line, and I'd be interested to hear from anyone connected. Many thanks again.
-
You're very welcome, Tom Walsh Jr, Jr, Jr.................! Glad to be
of help. I also have loads of rellies still in Cardenden and do have other
rare photos of the place. I took a look at some of my stuff and found a photo of a M.Welsh in Cardenden Primary School in 1951. If this is a relative and you'd like the
photo please email me privately: *

There are Flemings too. Was David Fleming Clark's mother a Fleming?
For some reason that name rings a bell with me, but I can't think
why. If you give me some dates maybe I can figure out where I've
seen it before.
Also if any of the above are yours, give me your address and I will send the

-
Hi again,
I am in California - the other side of the world to you!
But I grew up in Fife, my dad was born in Auchterderran
and most of his family's descendants still live there. I was over
in July/August for 6 weeks with the family.
My gran's sister Beatrice married Edward Walker Herkes and they
emigrated to NZ in 1925. I am in contact with their only
surviving son and his family in Auckland.
I've traced the Fleming side back to Thomas Fleming and
Christian Harvey who were married in 1802 in Markinch Fife.
However, I've managed to trace Christian Harvey's side back to
Robert Horseburgh born abt. 1650. The name Shank(s)
actually came from the Patterson side of the family.
Shanks Patterson was born in 1765 Auchtertool,
the son of John Patterson and Christian Turnbull.
Anyway, don't want to write too much on here. Will give you
everything when I hear from you.
All the best,
Eaine
-
wow, that is great, i have only traced back to christian harvey and thomas fleming, i have been curious as to where the shanks came into things not realising it was from christian patteson's line of the tree that is great, will email you on your address

-
Hi Christine,
Wow! We seem to have opened a can of worms here!
No, David Herd is not a relation of mine but I may have
a photo of him somewhere.
Where do you live?
Elaine
-
Dont mean to intrude here, between Christine and Elaine, but Ive just noticed the name Herd crop up, in Auchterderran? Almost all of my Herd ancestors come from that place and I also have a branch of the Herd tree who were the Patersons. I have a guy in my tree called Shanks Paterson. This sounds like quite an uncommon first name and if you have it in your tree, along with some Herds, makes me think there is a link somewhere!
Look forward to hearing from you both
Regards,
Matt :)
-
Hi Matthew,
Yes there is a link, I have 4 Shanks Pattersons in that line.
Also plenty of Herds on the school list.
Please contact me by email and I will send you the original documents.

Hi Christine,
I don't know if your question was directed to me or the previous poster, but have we been in contact
before? Was your father Edward Walker Herkes Clark, b. 1910, Dundonald, son of Shanks Fleming Clark and Mary Walker Herkes? If so we are related by marriage.

Hi Elaine sorry to trouble you.
Could you try Paterson with the one 'T'

That's all the Pattersons there are on those lists. The spelling is irrelevant. It all depended on
who was writing the name down, and how they thought it should be spelt.

Hi Elaine,
I just stumbled across your information about the School Records. I noticed the 'Cook' names and believe three of them are my relatives. Robert, Alexander and John - John being my Grandfather and the other two his brothers that died in the War. I would love to have a copy of these records to pass onto my Uncle who holds the information of our family tree.
Please let me know.
Kind Regards
Kate

Hi Elaine,
Was there any Jacksons on the school records, I have ancestors from that area, and that time.
Artrat.

Sorry No Jacksons. Doesn't mean anything, this is just a random selection of names. You can get school records by contacting Kirkcaldy Council.

Hi,
I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. Rootschat used to send me email notifications before and as I hadn't had any in ages I thought no-one had asked for a look-up.
For Helen Brown and her siblings I need more info, ie name of parents approx DOB etc. There are too many Browns for me to guess.
Date of Admission: Sept 25th 1900
Name: Robert Robertson
DOB: April 29th 1895
Father: Charles Robertson
Address: Dundonald
Previous school attended: Auchterderran Primary School, Infant
Exact date of leaving: Dec 8th 1902
Reason for leaving: Transferred to Auchterderran
Date of Admission: March 1st 1916
Name: Robert Robertson
DOB: Aug 21st 1903
Father: William Robertson
Address: 23 17th St.
Previous school attended: Denend, Senior I
Date of Leaving: July 1916
Reason for leaving: To Supplemental class
These are the only 2 Robert Robertsons, but this is just a small fraction of the actual records.

Elaine,
My mother, Janet Gilmour McCall, was born in Auchterderran on 3 May 1922 and would have gone to school there from around 1927 until 1929 when the family immigrated to S Africa. Her parents were Archibald and Mary McCall and lived in the Cluny or Cardenden area.
I would love any documents or school records relating to her.
Thanks
Lorraine

Hi Elaine,
Just remembered that my maternal grandmother and her brother grew up in Aucherderran and would have gone to school there in early 1900's. Their names were Mary Clark Arnott and Thomas Arnott.

Hi Elaine
I'm trying to re-trace my grandfathers steps.
I know he must have gone to school in Fife during the period that you have info on. He was married in Auchterderran Parish Church in September 1923. I'm assuming he may have well have been mentioned in your school records and anything you could find would help me enormously.
His name was Thomas (Clarey) Russell and I'm sure he was born in 1899

Hi Elaine,

Hi All
Please note that Elaine, who started this post off back in 2007, has not been on line here on RootsChat since early 2009.
Unless someone else comes in who has access to similar archives and records (or Elaine logs back on to RootsChat), new posts are unlikely to get a response unfortunately.
Monica :)
-
Thanks for that thought it might be a long shot.
Is there any other way of me contacting Elaine.
Regards, John
-
Hi John
Unfortunately not :-\ You can send a Personal Message to people, but in reality this is no different to posting on the main boards. In both cases, an automatic notification is sent to someone that there is a new posting on RC.
It may be that Elaine has switched off her notifcations or has simply changed email providers since then.

Hi Elaine,
I hope you have had a good Easter. Long time no speak!
Page 3 of this thread, reply #27
I descend from a John Patterson and Elizabeth Whyte. They named their first son Shanks Patterson so I am wondering if the Shanks Patterson b1764 you mention on this page may be my John's father.
Do you have any other info on this family, please?
Thanks,
Matt.

I apologize to anyone who has asked for a look up and not received a reply. Rootschat blocked me from replying due to copyright infringement though I did tell them the records I have in my possession have never been copyrighted. I do still have the records and am happy to look up anything for anyone. I believe Rootschat also blocked my email address. I will try again,
(*) If this is blocked look me up on Facebook under the "Residents of Cardenden Past & Present.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/107164098210/
This is a fantastic resource for researching family from Cardenden and includes 100's of old photos.
Matt get in touch with me. There is no email address on your BLOG...
All the best
Elaine
Added: Elaine, your personal email and anyone else who includes their personal emails is always deleted from RootsChat, as part of RC's policy to protect people from online abuse etc. The Personal Message service (PMs) is there for the easy exchange of personal emails at any time.

Neither myself nor the other admin can see your request. It's not the Cardenden then and now. It's the History of Auchterderran, Bowhill, Cardenden & Dundonald. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1483803408581366/
Thank you I have requested to be added to the group, if you could accept me I would really appreciate it!

I have seen post by Matt R dated 12 April 2012 stating that he is descended from John Patterson and Elizabeth Whyte. I also am descended from this John and Elizabeth and am trying to find out more about the Patterson family. I am unable to contact Matt myself to find out more from him.
My ancestor is their son John born 1838. He married a Jane Ramsay and immigrated to New Zealand in 1875. I have reached a brickwall finding out more about their children and life in New Zealand, other than their daughter Helen Ramsay Patterson, who there is some info on but not enough to help me with my research.
I would love to hear from anyone who knows of this family.
Thanks,
Leah

My grandmother and her sisters lived in Auchterderran before immigrating to the US in 1911. Their father was George MacAndrew, sisters: Isabella MacAndrew, Margaret MacAndrew, Molly MacAndrew.
Thank you so much.
