Slightly bad news. Scotlands People is showing 21 William McKenzies born in 1816 in Scotland, so you may have a problem if that's all the information you have.

If you know where the marriage took place, then the census's may be the best way forward to find a town of birth.

Hi and Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Is this a possible marriage:

Is there any reason why you've posted this in Aberdeenshire? Do you think he might have been from there?

They are in the 1851 census for Wigan, District 1hh, 5 children and a 21 year old Ellen Cowley as a servant. Interesting occupation.

Malky

Added :- There is a William and Ann McKenzie listed in the census's for Aberdeenshire between 1851 and 1881.

IGI has a birth in Wigan on the 4th January 1818 for an Ann Cowley. It's the only Wigan one I have found.

Malky (IGI is playing up at present.)

Just got in, Malky. I've been doing some of my own family history this morning - traced to Co. Monaghan  :D

Here's the entry:

4 Jan 1818 Wigan (extracted, so pukka)

Ann Cowley d/o John Cowley and Elizabeth

Added - also Ellen Cowley b. 15 July 1829, same parents

hello.
The William you're looking for is my 3x great grandfather.
I have hit the same brick wall as you but do have some information about him which you might find interesting.
We think we may have traced him to a croft in the far north west of Scotland, but have no proof that it's him.
Drop me a line to my email - (*) - and I'll send you what I have.
Also, how are you related to William? And to me?
Paul

1851
William McKenzie, 37, victualler and Mason employing 5 men, b. Scotland

Assuming that his age in the 1851 census is accurate, he would have been born between April 1813 and March 1814. I wish these sites wouldn't calculate the birth year by subtracting the age from the census year, because it gives the wrong answer in 3 cases out of 4.

From 1851, The census was always taken about the end of March or beginning of April. Anyone born after early April had not yet had their 1851 birthday, and would have been a year older by the end of 1851. Only people born between January and March had had their birthday - and that's only one quarter of the year. So about three-quarters of ages are incorrectly calculated.
