Hi There
Just came across you post and am not sure if you are still interested.  I'm currently helping my brother in law who isn't that confident on a compute and his daughter put together some of their family history.  He is descended from John Hugh Ross Macdonald who after joining the military on a number of occasions, headed out to Tasmania, Australia and at the age of 49 married and had a family (vaguely have a note he may have been married previously as well).  He passed away in 1916 in Latrobe, Tasmania, Australia.  I'm uploaded a newpaper obit for John Hugh Ross for your information. Let me know if you are still looking into this family.
Cheers
Karen
