When was he born?

If before 1st July 1837 (start of Civil Registration) there won't be a birth certificate!

Using http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl to search for the birth, there doesn't appear to be a William Campbell bn +/- 5yrs 1871 - there is a John William in 1873, and a 'male' in 1869.  Is there any possibility that William was registered under a different surname?  And is he consistent with his POB on all census?

Ok - is it worth getting a moderator to lock this thread, so that all answers could be on the other thread that you started?  Saves my tiny brain getting confused!!  ;)
