Title: John Lovett
Post by: Bangladore on Wednesday 11 April 12 16:26 BST (UK)
Can any one find a baptism, death or burial  ( or anything! ) for John Lovett, please. The only official documentation I have is for his marriage in 1833 to Sarah Dexter in Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire.
He was in Barrow in 1841 - a tailor, aged 25.
That's all I have after 15 years of research!
Thankyou.

Do you have his wife and children on census after 1841?

Modified - have just found Sarah and children in 1851, Sarah's father still living with her. Sarah states she is married and there are additional children age Enoch 6, Enos 2 and Sarah 9mths.

If I'm looking at the right family on the census his wife is married & head of family in 1851 and a widow in 1861 when youngest child was 8 - so if John was the father then his death would be 1852-1861. As to his baptism - age 25 in 1841 meant ages 25-29 so born c1811-1816 assuming correct age stated. He does say born Leicestershire - occupation tailor.

There is a death in the Barrow on Soar registration district (where they were in 1841 & Sarah remained) for John Thomas Lovett in December quarter 1857 - they didn't record age on the GRO index then. You could check births & census for this name to see whether it may be him.

Modified to add - the burial registers for the church indicate this was an infant, so not likely!

Thankyou rosie and mshrmh
Yes, I know quite a bit about the family - it's just John who I can't trace.I know that in 1851 'he had long deserted the family' ( removal order ).
I followed up likely deaths in Leicester many years ago eg Melton Mowbray and Leicester but they were not right.
I found a transportation record for a John Lovett from Cambridge but no details - talk about grasping at straws!

Bangladore - if he had "long deserted the family" by 1851 are you able to state whether any of the post-1841 census children are his? If he was the informant on any of their births it would help pinning down when he was last around the family.
Re the marriage - was he "of this parish" and a tailor then? I know that would only mean he was technically resident there at the time, but if he was from somewhere else it might be a clue.

As he was given as a tailor, there may have been an entry in trade directories - some on the Historical Directories website, others at archives etc. If he was in business he could have been mentioned in the London Gazette (changes in partnerships, bankruptcies etc), also online & free. If you have access to Ancestry have you tried the probate calendars - they're not complete, but you could be lucky.

As you've got a removal order - have you tried local newspapers - some local libraries have access to the Gale collection online or there's the British Newspaper Archive - free to search, but payment to view, that is being added to all the time - there's an offer on of free credits at the moment:
