Title: Hope somebody can help
Post by: Bonbonxxx on Wednesday 11 April 12 12:35 BST (UK)
Long story..

My father john Bradley died in approx 1970 when I was just 5 yrs old, throughout my life I was told little about him and what I was told were lies ( don't know why). I was told he was an only child from ashby and had no relatives, however this has been disproven and I have found a living sibling of his in Newcastle upon Tyne.

So now I'm trying to find my past blind so to speak.. This is what I know so far

John Bradley, born 1921 mothers maiden name Seed, birth registered in Chester le Street.

Dad was the oldest of three brothers *

Grandfather had a sister Emily who married my Grandmothers brother.
my Grandfather John William Bradley, was born in 1899 at Lanchester, County Durham, which is just up the road from Chester le Street.

My Grandmother Margaret Ellen Bradley (nee Seed) born 1902, has her birth registered in Chester le Street.

This is all I can find out, can somebody point me in the right direction please, many thanks in advance

Hi Chloe, and welcome to Rootschat  :D

I'm sure we can help you to find some information about your father.  Was it about his life that you wanted to find out, or about his ancestry?  The latter may be easier than the former!

As you know your father's parents' names, you should be able to find them on the census returns for 1901 (your grandfather) and 1911 (your grandmother) - the earliest ones they will be on.  That will give you (hopefully) their parents' names.
You could also look for the marriage of your grandparents, which will give only fathers' names unfortunately.
Once you have the parents' names you can continue to trace back through the birth and marriage records and the census.

Let me know if I'm on the right track with what you're after  ;)

Cheers
Prue

(P.S.  I had to remove the names of your father's brothers, as you said they are still living - Rootschat policy).

Sorry about mentioning names, was just trying to give all the info I had.. Will go now and read all rules

Hi Chloe, welcome to Rootschat!

Prue has given you some really good pointers.  It is really important that you back up any discoveries with evidence such as birth or marriage certificates.

www.freebmd.org.uk will help you look up reference numbers for ordering certificates from the GRO.  For example, in 1921:

Mar quarter (so married in Jan, Feb or March) 1921
John W Bradley married Margaret E Seed in Chester-le-s. (this is the registration district), volume 10a, page 1240
This reference can be used for ordering certs from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp (at a cost of £9.25, which is a lot, but sometimes it is the only way to get conclusive proof)

As for where to read census forms, they are available on line at a range of places.  I guess the most popular are probably www.findmypast.co.uk and www.ancestry.co.uk both of which are subscription, but they have a range of packages depending on what/how you will use the site.  I think that findmypast might do pay as you go type packages.

Hi Chloe

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are.

Apart from the 1881 census which is transcribed at www.familysearch.org , you will have to take out a subscription to Find My Past or Ancestry (or other similar sites) to view details from the other censuses.

We can't do look-ups from the 1911 census due to the terms and conditions of the site but there are hints and tips here

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,492718.0.html

But check out your local library to see if they offer free access to either of the sites, many do.

Don't know how much of this info you have:

John W Bradley m Margaret E Seed q1 1921, Chester-le-Street

and

Emily Bradley m Henry A Seed q3 1919, Lanchester

There are 3 relevant Bradley births registered in Chester-le-Street between 1921 and 1929 - I'll not put the names of the two younger ones for the reason given above, but the oldest was John.

There was just 1 birth, registered in 1924 in Lanchester, with surname Seed and mother's mn Bradley.

Not sure about this lot - they are all together on the 1911, and there doesn't appear to be an Emily

Looking at the free 1911 index, it looks as if Margaret's parents were called John and Sarah Jane Seed (both aged 44) and Harry - Henry? - Seed was aged 3.  In which case he married when he was 16ish!
Other children are Ada (19), Ernest (18), Robert (16), William (14), Mary (12), Thomas (6) and Hannah (2).

I wonder if Emily Bradley was a similar age to Harry?

Hi Chloe,

Due to copyright issues etc we are not allowed to post details from 1911 census

I think we are all doing a lot of Guessing (myself included in that )

Are you certain Henry A Seed who marrieed Emily Bradley was a brother to Margaret Seed? and  are you sure Emily Bradley was sister to John W Bradley???

There is a death reg for henry A Seed age 71 b.c. 1892 death reg Mar qtr 1963 Sunderland 1a 1314

1901 there is a Henry Arthur seed age 9 b. Durham with parents Timothy and Emily
RG13 4676 24 24

????

I think you really need certificates to confirm parents

THere are possible deaths for Emily (1963) and Henry (1979) in Sunderland that would tie in with birthdates of 1893 and 1907 respectively.

Redboxed - and yes, I agree that certificates are needed!  All this is guesswork without proof at the moment

mmm.. Emenly b1893 not with family on 1901c

Joseph, Elizabeth Jane, William, Patrick, JOHN & Mary Ann

your grandfather born 1899 Lanchester

birth entry FreeBMD
John William BRADLEY SEP 1899 Lanchester 10a Vol 357

Can’t see one for an Emily/Emenly Bradley 1893 ???
Alternate spellings: Emilee, Emmalie, Emely, Emili
There is this entry on Free BMD Amelia Bradley Jun 1891 Durham vol 10a page 426

You may need to obtain his birth or marriage certificate to confirm his father's name

Hi Chloe

I know that it is a long time since you posted on here but I'm answering in the faint hope that you get my post. I'm writing because as soon as I started reading the information, I realised that this is my family! Most of the information about the Seed family that was given is correct- I know this as your grandmother was my great aunt and your father and his brothers are my mother's cousins. I knew your grandmother well and have quite a lot of information about the family.

I hope this message gets through to you!!

If it doesn't does anyone know who I contact so that they could perhaps pass on my message to Chloe's email which I know stays hidden.

Catherine

Hi Catherine,  you will need to post two more messages to this thread. After that you can send a Private Message to Chloe, which will go to her through her email address, and hopefully you will get a response from that!  So just reply to this message of mine, twice!  Then you will have your three messages posted, and can access the Send Private Message button on any of Chloe's posts.

With having such a connection, it's a shame if you can't contact her, I'm sure she will be delighted to hear from you.  The only snag I can see is if she has changed her email address from that originally given, as you say it's an old post?  But - nothing ventured, nothing gained, so certainly give it a shot!

Just checked her profile, she hasn't actually signed in since 2012, but still reply to this 2 more times and then give the PM message a try anyway! If she has her notifications turned on for replies, she should also get emails re these posts, again that's if her email hasn't been changed, and if she hasn't entered the change.  Hope that makes sense!

I have also sent her a PM, telling her she has a Visitor!

Good luck
Jeanne😄
