Hej !
I've not found Any new information on my relative Janne for month and months - I am stuck !
I would Love if Anyone could help me find him.
Janne Sandberg born sep 25, 1847 in Florshult, Sweden.
His parents : Nils Sandberg born 1808 and Pernilla Nilsdotter.
According to a Very old post on another website - this very man, Janne Sandberg, was a steward on ships, the first one was SS Camellia mar 12, 1885 - 21 feb 1887 and they sailed from Cardiff.
- And the person (who I cant find) was a descendant to Janne, so he obvisouly had a family in England.
But - I cannot find Anything ! Can anyone help me find something on Janne or his family in England?
Thank you in advance.
Johanna Sandberg

The Cornwall records office has crew lists for a list of ships. The Camelia is one of them. You could email them, as you cannot visit and ask if they have more information on Janne

Oooh, sorry she's listed as a sailing fishing vessel, so wrong ship!

Have you looked at John Sandberg bn 1847 Sweden on the 1881 census - he is a tailor in MIddlesex with wife Matilda and son Johan E A A Sandberg (5mnths old, bn Middlesex). RG11; Piece: 129; Folio: 67; Page: 20
John Sandberg says that he is a naturalised British Subject, which might mean the National Archives has a record of him.
Perhaps not - in 1901 he is still a tailor RG13; Piece: 455; Folio: 80; Page: 33
Back to the drawing board!

Ok, a little detective work leads me to believe that the son of Janne Sandberg was John W Sandberg bn c. 1883 in Northumberland. I will PM you to explain how I reached that conclusion.
Looking at the 1911 free index, he appears to have a wife - Annie, and daughter Ada MAry. Living in North Shields, Northumberland.

1901 census:
37 dene St, Northumberland
Mary Sandberg Wife Mar 47 bn North Shields
John W Sandberg Son 18 Ship yard labourer bn North Shields
Phyllis I Sandberg Dau 16 General domestic servant bn north Shields
James J Sandberg Son 14 Labourer in grain warehouse bn North Shields
Anna Sandberg Dau 12 bn North Shields
RG13; Piece: 4800; Folio: 153; Page: 40

1891 - family are living on Davisons Lane, North Shields.
RG12; Piece: 4223; Folio: 40; Page: 31
Janne is enumerated as John, aged 42 bn Sweden. There is also an additional daughter not on the 1901 census - Ada M Sandberg, aged 12

A possibility for John/Janne's death from the GRO marine death indicies - death year 1906, vessel Begonia, age 56, page 220
I think the BEgonia may have been a steamship owned/operated by Stag Line out of North Shields. The original Begonia was built in 1899 and sold off in 1916 to the Maindy Shipping Co, Cardiff.

Some info from the crew list:
John Sandberg, bn 1849, Sweden.
Steward on the Stephanotis for the period 9 Oct 1891 - 14 Dec 1891
Master: D Munro
Owner: Joseph RObinson (was bought out by Stag Line I think)
Vessel Official Number: 65382
Sailing out of North Shields
BT99/1689
He had done an earlier trip on this vessel - 3 Mar 1891 - 29 May 1891
Prior to the 3 Mar 1891 trip, he had been on the Amaryllis

I've been trying to work out what happened to Janne's wife and children.
I think that in 1911 wife Mary is with daughter Ada. Indexed as SANDBURG
Phyllisina (?!) Sandberg mar John Thomas Johnson in Dec qtr 1908 Tynemouth 10b 336. From 1911 index: John THomas Johnson (31), Phyllisina JOhnson (26), Phyllis Doxford Johnson (1), Victor Grayson Johnson (3mnths)

Perhaps Tyne and Wear archives might have data relating to shipping companies - and log books that might have recorded Janne's death http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/archives/makingavisit/

I suspect this may be the post you were referring to
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/MARINERS/1999-07/0932999272
I note there is an email address. It may be pertinent to contact the poster to try and ascertain if the person mentioned in the post is in fact your ancestor. If you get no responce, come back to this page and we can try and figure out via crew agreements if it was your ancestor aboard CAMELIA.
Just because a vessel sails from a particular port that doesn't mean to say the vessel was registered there. In fact the CAMELIA in question was registered in North Shields. I do think there may be a North Shields connection some where along the line.
