Title: Pub on Bean St, Hull
Post by: suttontrust on Saturday 07 April 12 09:24 BST (UK)
If anyone has that book on old Hull pubs I would be glad to know of a pub on Bean St in 1881.  Christopher Hewson, a sailmaker, tried his hand at being a publican and is on the 1881 census as such, at 17 Bean St.

That pub would be called BEANS, I have it on beers and spirits houses in Hull 1892, 17 Bean Street.

Thanks.  I'll have to look in the directories to see if it was called that in 1881.  Hewson had given up by 1891 and gone back to sailmaking.

There's a mention of the Bean Hotel on this site (the paragraph half way down) - http://www.anlabyroad.com/South/bean/bean-street-history.html

And a picture of it here - http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/yorkshire/kingstonuponhull_bean.html

My uncle, Charlie, used to own the pub (full name: Charlie Thompson). He had it at least 20 years (from the 1970's onwards).

He's dead now. Passed a few years ago. Nice to see the old place again
