In the early 1950's my father spent 6 months there. He was allowed home at the weekends but in there he spent hisd time making stuffed animals for me, leather crafts and basket weaving. I think it had something to do with his war wounds as he showed me several pieces of shrapnel that had been removed, I think at that time, as they had started to move around and were causing him problems.
Was Dunston a veterans hospital in the early 1950's? Or was it a TB hospital?

Found this via Google:
The Dunston Hill hospital (63 beds) on Wickham Highway was originally established as a War Pensioner Hospital at Castle Leazes, Newcastle. Eventually in 1928 it was moved to Dunston Hill. It was controlled by the Ministry of Pensions until 1953 when it passed to the control of the Ministry of Health, but it was not absorbed into the National Health Service until 1 April 1956, when it became one of the group of hospitals administered by Gateshead and District Hospital Management Committee.

Dunston Hill Hospital was in County Durham and never in Northumberland as it is South of the River Tyne at that part of the river before the Tyne becomes a fully Northumberland river more westward.

Believe belonged to the Carr-Ellison Family before transformation into Hospital. There is a book that tells details of all this which I have where i live.

It sounds as though it was a War Pensioner hospital when my Dad was there. He always lived in Newcastle though.

Hello Brian
That is a very useful link. I can get to the archives mentioned so will persuade them to let me look at my fathers file as he is deceased and I am the only next of kin.
