Title: Prison/Death records
Post by: Joe123 on Wednesday 04 April 12 15:55 BST (UK)
Hi,

If someone died in Prison around 1901 would their death still be entered in BMD records?

I have found a relative who was an inmate in Staffordshire Prison in 1901 for fraud deception & theft. She had already served time doing hard labour but was deemed to be so ill she couldn't stand further trial, but the records do not state what then happened to her. I obtained this information from the original records at Stafford records office. I'm guessing she possible died shortly afterwards but cannot find any record of her death. She doesn't appear in 1911 census it like she just disappears.

I would imagine so. I don't think the GRO make a distinction in that regard. Have you looked at the BMD's?

Thank you for your reply. I have checked but came up with nothing in the BMD records. I can only assume her family didn't bury her and as she used so many variations of her true name could be registered under anything.

Thanks
