Title: Cost of a Lair
Post by: harton on Tuesday 03 April 12 22:43 BST (UK)
I have on of my wife's ancestors buried in St Peters Church yard Peterhead in 1842. H She was buried in lair 218 but he purchased not only this lair bur also the two adjacent ones. Could anyone tell me how much it would cost to purchase the 3 lairs. Thanks in anticipation.

I should imagine the cost would vary from place, but I have in my possession a receipt for £1 for a grave space in Kemnay Burial Ground in 1892.

the lair registers/interment registers for each cemetery frequently note the price paid for the lair...that's if they still exist for the cemetery you're interested in.  I've always got the impression that lairs were more affordable back then, as you quite often see multiple purchases or lairs in the same section by the same person.

Thank you both for the suggestion, the reason for the question was that William Wallace purchased 3 lairs in Peterhead and his occupation on the gravestone was a sailor. I didn't think sailors would be that well paid.
Thanks again
