Title: Patrick Fennelly
Post by: njlois on Tuesday 03 April 12 20:48 BST (UK)
My grandfather, Patrick Fennelly, was born in Kilkenny, Tipperary (Doon Parish) around 1858.
At some point in time, he relocated to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  He got married early in 1890.   After that I am able to trace his family (wife, children).  I would like to know more about his early days in Ireland.   I have no idea where to start.   Thanks for your help!

Patrick's birth is before the start of civil birth records in 1864, so you will need to check church records.  see :

    Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)

Do you have his father's name and occupation from the marriage cert ?

.....

are you sure about the location ?

I see a civil parish named Doon in Co. Tipperary North Riding, but there's no townland in it named Kilkenny....

I have Patrick and Ellen's birth certificate. They were married on January 26, 1890.   His father's name is Timothy, and his profession is a farmer.  The certificate says he is deceased.  Patrick worked in the shipyard in Newcastle.

Sorry, I have County Kilkenny, Tipperary, Doon Parish, but my knowledge of Ireland is very limited.
Thank you for your help.

Hello,

where do you get Doon Parish from? A parish is more specific than a county - I just wondered.
There is a Kilcooly Parish in Tipperary.

Griffiths Valuation (abt 1850s) has no Timothy Fennelly in Tipperary (although doesn't mean that there aren't any) but there are a couple in Kilkenny (http://www.failteromhat.com/post1845.php).

There is a death of a Timothy Fennely 62 yrs (born about 1807) in 1869
Kilkenny  volume 3  pg 433

regards
heywood

location doesn't make much sense to me at the moment either ... there are Civil parishes named Doon in Counties Limerick and Tipperary but none in Co. Kilkenny. There could also be RC parishes with the name..

What's the source of the location you have ?

the post on the genforum is from me  ;)

I know he was Roman Catholic

I know he was from Kilkenny (it's on the UK census from 1911)

Honestly, I wasn't keeping good records when I started out doing this.

I'm now keeping better copies.

My grandfather was also Patrick Fennelly, he was one of eleven brothers born in County Cork; most of them went to America to build the railway but he joined the army and eventually gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a keen boxer; in fact, in 1924 he coached the British Olympic boxing team.
When he left the army he was given a grace and favour house in Bushey Park called the White Lodge. He was very famous for his daily constitutionals around the park, followed closely by a couple of chickens a cat and a dog. I remember visiting him when I was a small child and although he could kill a man with his bare hands in a matter of seconds, I remember him to be the gentlest, loving and kindest grandad.

Oh, such good memories.   I wish I had known "my Patrick."   I know he worked in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne shipyard.

Hi 'njlois'

My great great grandfather was a Fennelly from County Laois.

HA, not saying they are related or anything exciting like that but just to give you a word of warning on this surname. It proved to be the hardest branch of my tree to do. I know all surnames get misspelt over the years but this one was a shocker for the variations I found.

When doing your research please look out for Finley's and Finlay's too as this is how my family ended up spelling it.

Good Luck,

Tara

Hi Tara,

I have a niece named Tara.  I know what you mean about the mis-spellings.  I've also seen Finelly.  It sounds like you had success finding your Fennelly(s).   I hope I do as well.

Hiya Lois,

No, I didn't do well with my Fennelly's at all :( I was just blessed that my great grandfather had Laois put on one of the census, which pointed me in somewhat of the right direction, but I only got his father and siblings...nothing else.

Fingers crossed you fare better !

Oh and going back that far Timothy was also known as 'Thaddeus' on certain records - sorry, don't want to confuse you, but just incase you come across something with Thaddeus on it, don't discount it out of hand.

Hi Lois

Also, ask the moderator to move this to County Kilkenny as you will get better help in your correct County search.
