Does anyone know whether there is still a house called Neuheim in Queens Road Felixstowe. In 1911 it was in use as private girls school - headmistress Elisabeth Jutson.
Thanks in advance if anyone has any knowledge of this building.

Felixstowe Family History Group may be able to help further or the Felixstowe History and Museum Society.
I will PM the email addresses to you ;)
It sounds like one of the many small, private schools we tend to refer to as Dame Schools.

Thanks Pat,
Knowing where to look is as good as knowing the answer.
There did seem to be a lot of these small private schools about. I had not heard of the term ' Dame school' but my wife had.

Hi Mike :)
I was in Felixstowe today and would have looked if I'd known - d'oh ::)
If you haven't got an answer by Friday night, I'll stroll down there on Saturday after work. It must have been at the south end of Queen's Road, near the sea, as the north (town) end hadn't been built in 1911. Most of those big old houses have survived so you could be lucky ;D
All the best,
Carol

Hi Carol,
Many thanks. I have been to Felixstowe a few times but cannot really say I know it. I tend to think of it as a town split into three parts - the seaside, the port and the normal town (shops, offices houses).
If I know the building exists I will make an effort to visit Felixstowe when we get a nice sunny weekend. If it has disappeared I will ask the local history society as recommended by Pat if they know what happened to it.
Elisabeth Jutson was a cousin of my great grandfather. They came from Hampshire so I was quite surprised to find her turning up on the Suffolk coast.
Thanks again for your offer.
Kind regards
Mike

I happened to be in Felixstowe yesterday and walked Queens Road but I couldn’t find a property with that name. I did see a several possibles, one now owned / rented by Suffolk Social Services but had no name, I thought the windows at the top were very nicely designed, that was at the sea end. It’s a shame you haven’t a number. I wonder if a trade directory would have information.

It seems to be among a batch of large named houses (ie no number).
Thanks for everyone's efforts.

108 Queens Road, Fx. is owned/occupied by Suffolk County Council (address imprinted on memory from the many times I attended...) and was a combined residential home/day centre. I understand it's now a day centre and offices for some SCC Social services staff.
It is located on the right hand side towards Wolsey Gardens (cliff top).
As to any previous use, I've not been able to find out. Certainly one of the bigger overall plots in the road and would be suited as a school. I remember a couple of other small schools which were in the town.
Regards... Andrew.

Me again :D
The present-day house numbering is nothing like 1911 anyway, so doesn't help our search :(
However, I've found one of the other house names on Google Streetview - we're getting closer 8) - but won't post it in case an army of RCers turns up with cameras :o
All the best,
Carol

Hi Mike :)
Had a look this evening but no luck I'm afraid. There's a fanlight above each front door with a scroll design where you'd expect to see the house name - unhelpfully, they're all plain white ::)
I can only suggest you Streetview the address Andrew gave earlier and 'walk' that block to get the feel of the area.
If you ever find Neuheim, please let us know - I'm intrigued now!
All the best,
Carol

Hi Carol,
Thanks for your efforts. I will certainly post if and when I find an answer.
10 years earlier Elisabeth ran a similar establishment in Woodbridge (I have found a photo of this house on the web).
I have been trying to guess how the Felixstowe House got its name. There was a foreign language teacher in residence so perhaps the name gave it a continental touch to encourage language students. Elisabeth's mother's maiden name was Newman - so there is another slant.
I know that during WW1 a lot of German sounding names were changed - so perhaps this lead to the house name disappearing. I did look for any possible meanings and found it was a name of a canton in Switzerland!
The search goes on.
Kind regards
Mike

There may have been a considerable number of German" linked names in Fx.
In the run up to WW1, following the German Empress and her children's visit to Fx. in 1891, the resort became "the place" to be seen.
Regards... Andrew.

Agreed, but all the houses in that row, on both sides of the road, have the same white scroll. The other names included 'Harbourne' and 'Fernleigh' - thoroughly British! - so it's not an anti-German thing. Possibly in WW1 or WW2 streets and houses had their names concealed to confuse invading forces :-\
Another source of info would be the Felixstowe Society (local history and conservation). I know them by reputation only, but their annual dinner is on 16 April at the Brook Hotel - which is towards the south end of Queen's Road, right next to the houses in question!
Best of luck,
Carol

.......... and while I was typing that, my brilliant husband was quietly looking at Cowell's Directory of Walton & Felixstowe 1909 - and he found Neuheim :o ;D ;D
It's still there, on the south-west corner of Queen's Road and Orwell Road, opposite the Brook Hotel.
All the best,
Carol
-
Carol & Andrew,
Thanks for your input. I am learning lots !
I have emailed the local History Society - fingers crossed
Kind regards
Mike
-
Well done Carol,
You (or your brilliant husband) seem to have cracked it !
The next sunny week-end I will have a look.
Thanks again
Mike
-
Ooooh, next time I pop over I too shall be having a little look at this house!
Brilliant detective work everyone ;D
Pat ...

According to Cowells 1909 it reads as Follows'Queens road from Wolsley Gardens to Crescent road left hand side.''Cawthorne'' John Frederick B.A. St felix College prepatory School for boys.''Fernliegh'',then 'Brachen Villa'.''Harbourn'','Valleta' then ,'Neuheim'. E Jutson.
It then states 'here is Orwell road' so reading it like that it must be the last house on the corner.
Some help at least I hope.
-
Thanks for all the details.
I should be able to find it now.
Just awaiting that elusive sunny week end to visit the coast!!
Mike
-
Mike, let us know when you're coming over and we could all meet for a pint 8)
But don't bother looking for the house names - as I've already said, these houses no longer show their old names.
Carol
-
Carol,
Sounds a good idea - will let you know when we will in Felixstowe.
I am aware from earlier posts that the house will not be named - but the position should not have changed - i think it is too far in from the sea to have suffered coastal erosion !
Best wishes
Mike

Hi all, I happened upon this chat whilst looking up further old photos online. I live at what was Neuheim. Do you still need any info?
-
Hi,
That was an unexpected reply from the past!. I am ashamed to say that I have still not managed to visit Felixstowe. I am not sure how long Elisabeth Jutson remained in Felixstowe - by 1939 she was running a boarding house in Hastings and in 1939 the houses in Queens Road were known by numbers. It is good to know that the house is still occupied.
Kind regards
Mike
-
This advertisement from 1914 may be of interest.
I see no sign of the school or Mrs Jutson in later directories.
A Miss Salter appears to have been at the house in 1938 but it was unoccupied in 1939.
David
-
Thank you for that David. An impressive looking house - looks ideal for a small school.
I am looking at Elizabeth Jutland's life afresh. She died in Hastings in 1947.
In 1901 she was running a different School from Brook House, Cumberland Street Woodbridge.

I live in Felixstowe, Looking at the picture, I would say that house is on the crossroad junction of Queen's Road and Orwell Road.

It's still there, on the south-west corner of Queen's Road and Orwell Road, opposite the Brook Hotel.
Thanks for the validation johnboy :D
Carol

Serves me right for jumping from page one to page three ;D ;D
-
No worries, it's easily done :)
I lived very close to Felixstowe for about 18 years, then sold up and spent three nights at the Brook Hotel before emigrating to Australia. Seeing this thread again brings it all back!

Thanks everyone for their contributions. I think, I too, have been to the Brook Hotel (for a conference) many many years ago.
One of the many joys of this site are the memories that are brought back.
