my grandad is 92 years old and recently has told me he would love to see a photo of his father uniformed from the ww1 as he has never seen one?
is this possible

Post what you know of his service(if anything) a name and place of birth would be helpful.
In general there werent "official" photos but many had them put in local papers and sometimes unit photos are found

I think that could be a difficult one! Do you know who he served with? Regiment, location that type of thing? If you post his name and any details you might already know then I'm sure Rootschatters will be only too willing to help. :)

SERVED IN FRANCE 1914
REG NUMBER: 12018 ACTING SERGEANT
DISCHARGED IN 1918 DUE TO AMPUTATION OF THE LEG

Was he born in Birmingham? I've found a George Willoughby Watts born Q2 1881 in Birmingham.
There's a George Wallebey Watts in the Army Service Records born Winson Green Birmingham who was aged 20 years and 10 months on 29th January 1902 when he signed his attestation papers. His parents were James and Anna Watts.
Do you recognise any of the above?

this is very interesting? as his parents are james and anne watts did they spell his middle name incorrect wallebey when it should be willoughby and his mother is supposed to be anne not anna?
i do have 2 reg numbers on his medal rolls index number so i take it he served more than once??
as the one i found he served in ww1 when he was 33.

I have a photo of my g grandfather in his uniform which I got from the Oldham archives, as Ady says they were often in local papers, therefore I think you should contact the Birmingham archives to see if they have such records. Good luck :)

George Wallebey Watts' parents' address is given as 23 Dugdale Street, Winson Green. He served in South Africa in 1902 in the 1st VB South Stafford regiment. In the 'signature of recruit' box he has written very clearly George Wallebey Watts, so it's not a mistranscription.

I wa very lucky to find my ancestors's photos in my grandmother's house after she died. Perhaps if you ask round other members of your family they may have some you could borrow for copying?

James and Annie Watts are at 23 Dugdale St in the 1901 census, with children called George, Eliza, Florence, Gert and William. Are any of those names familiar?

im unsure about those names but i do have george willoughbys watts marriage certificate and it states at the time of marriage 1903 age 23 its states he was living 23 dugdale street.

Hi you got some very good advice in that if you go to your main Library that has a paper library and ask if they have hard copies of the papers of that time there is a chance you will find a photo of him. Ask the people there if they know of one of the papers of that time that put dead or injured men's photos as a rule. Then go to the 1918 editions and just take your time and go through them. All the best to you and your grandfather.
