I'm trying to find out about a John Wigley who was a Land surveyor in Pembrokeshire in the 18th century. Where might he have come from?
I know that the name is associated with Derbyshire but it seems unlikely that hr would have been born there and then find himself in west Wales by the time he was of working age.
Were there other Wigleys in Wales in the 18th century? Any help would be appreciated.

Given the time frame, I would tend to agree with you. However, you might need to look up a job description of a land surveyor, specifically for the 18th century. It may well be that it was a specialised job, and that is why a man born in Derbyshire ended up in Wales.
Re-reading your post, you also need to discover more about him as an individual. Where he was born, etc. As you say, he may well have been from Wales himself.

A quick google search suggests that JOhn WIgley was the victim of an assault in 1792, with a court case following. Have you looked at those court papers to see whether it mentions John Wigley's age and place of birth etc?

There is a will of 1833 for an Allice Wigley, widow,Pembroke at www.llgc.org.uk
Could this be his widow?A quick glance suggests heirs appear to be through daughters and a Phillips family. There are no Wigleys listed in the 1841 census for Pembrokeshire.Might be worth a look.
