Can't see a baptism for John Teal in Halifax.  But there is this family living at High Oldfield in Warley (Halifax area):  HO107 2300 Folio 523 page 10
Jonathan Teal 32 Hand loom weaver (carpet)
Judith Teal 32
Joseph 10 factory operative (worsted) scholar - so a part-timer
John 8 factory operative (worsted) scholar
Josiah 6
Thomas 3
William B 1

John's marriage certificate should provide you with his father's name - assuming NZ certificates are similar to English ones.

I have two John Teals in my family tree born circa 1842, Halifax.
Probably the previous ones notified.
Do you know when he emigrated to NZ?

Still trying to fine out about him - don't know when he came to NZ
born in Halifax 1843 married in NZ 1869 so somewhere in between.

Have his marriage cert but no parents on it, have ordered his death
cert to see if that will tell me anything. Don't know if he came on his
own or with family.

Sorry no more information than that. Thank you.

You can discount the family I found earlier - Jonathan and Judith at Warley.  John is still in England and living at home in 1871.  ;)  And married by 1881.

The other family with a John Teal in 1851 are at Haley Hill Northowram. They seem to have disappeared by 1861.

HO107/2302/138/26
John Teal 39 Excavator
Mary Teal 39 Wife
James Teal 17 factory worker
Elizabeth Teal 15 factory worker
Mary Ann Teal 13 factory worker
Thomas Teal 11 factory worker
John Teal 9 factory worker
Lydia Teal 2

All born Northowram.

Lydia is the one with the most distinctive name, and I'm not seeing any records for her on FreeBMD apart from her birth.

FreeBMD has her as Lydia Seal

Yes, I saw that after I had posted. !871 census confirms Lydia was born in Halifax. One member of the family accounted for then - where are the others?

Bumble & Marmaduke123 mentioned the two families I have in my tree.
It sounds as if your John may be the one living at Haley Hill in 1851.
If so he was the son of John Teal and Mary Lingard who married at St. Marys Todmorden 27 April 1833.
Another clue would be that he would have had a cousin Hannah who emigrated to NZ in the 1840s.

James Teal died 1 Feb 1856 and is buried at Lister Lane - not sure whether he is in the same grave as his parents

It appears John & Martha 2 sons & 2 daughters came to NZ 1858 then returned back to England.

As you say Martha was his 2nd wife, John must have married her before coming to NZ.
Mary died 1857 and John & Martha arrived in NZ June 1858 It is all coming slowly together.

You are a great team.

John & Mary Ann who went to New Orleans is not this family as the ages don't match.

John junior came to NZ

Hi I am Trustee of Lister Lane Cemetary Halifax and I note that you have some questions about grave inhabitants.
I can confirm that in grave number 3359 there is James Teal (died 1/02/1856)
Mary Teal ( died 12/06/1857) Mary Ann Armitage ( died 21/04/1862)
John Teal (died 11/05/1875) and Martha Teal ( died 04/08/1878)
I have been up to the cemetary to find any grave stone , but unfortunately it does not appear to be standing - There are a few in the area which are on their front but I cannot lift them to see if there is a stone with these names on.
We do have other Teals buried here so if you have a question about lost Teals please just drop me a line.
We have an open day tomorrow but obvioulsy you will be unable to come , however if you are over here any time I can show you round.
Best Regards
Stuart
