Sylvester Sutherland is a witness at the birth of Margaret Sutherland born 1788 in Edinburgh. She is a daughter of my George Sutherland and Penelope (nee Edgar).
I previously had no father for George … so on finding this Sylvester as witness, looked him up.
And found a record of a George Sutherland born 1766 to a Sylvester Sutherland and Margaret Nicol in St.Cuthberts Edinburgh.
Now – George and Pen were married in Edinburgh in 1787.
Then George went off and joined the Fencibles, so he moved about a bit – after that his other children were born all over the place….
The names of George and Pens children are:
Margaret, Janet, Robert, George and Henry…
No Sylvester?
Sylvester and Margaret’s children’s names are:
George, Alexander, Robert, John, William, David and Margaret.
So that looks interesting – although there are a few …that don’t fit.
I found a Sylvester birth to a Jo Sutherland in 1739 in Kirriemuir Angus-( but NO wife he was clever)
He also had lots of children named as follows:
James, Isabelle, Mary, George and William
What do you reckon…does this fit together?

Hello,
My rough reading of the attached is
"James Ramsay in Scolies fold had a dau Beatrise bapt.
Jo: Sutherland at E??mouth of R?lyrie had a son Sylvester bapt
Will Christie at ??side of Kenn??? had a daur Euphan bapt."
As you're aware what you've got is a clip with three fathers, their residence and the names of their children.
It was not uncommon for mothers names not to be on the records - as everyone knew who the mother was.
Regards, Steve :)

Hi
Silvester Sutherland was witness at birth of his brothers child in Edinburgh too - I descend from this brother - George.

Yes, I'm descended from brother George. Quite intrigued by the ability of family to move between Kirriemuir and Edinburgh, but the relatively unusual christian names really does help on that one - where Hanby comes from I just don't know.
I'm from Kirriemuir, now live 2 miles from Bristo in Edinburgh where they were living and working.

it is
2nd | Jo: [John] Sutherland at burnmouth of Kintyrie had a son Sylvester bapt: [baptised]
I've checked early Ordnance Survey maps and this seems to be correct as I found Kintyrie and Burnmouth located very near to each other but no place actually called 'Burnmouth of Kintyrie'. I had to stich two OS maps together for the image below but here's the link to the Kintyrie part.

Yes, that's right. The landscape aorund that area will have changed a bit in the 18th century with variosu enclosures and improvements - likely the places also changed.
