HI All
I have been trying to get a Birth Certificate for a John McKenna b abt 1854 Newcastle on Tyne.
I have already sent for two which turned out to be not the correct ones I got the information for these off the ANCESTRY BMD & FreeBMD indexes.
Checking the BMD off the Northumberland resources NEWCASTLE Births & Deaths I have found a
John Mckenna b 1853 checking on the Ancestry & FreeBmd it does not appear.
Does this happen I was always under the impression that the Ancestry & Freeband BMD where complete.
So is it worthwhile sending for?Cost building up Your thoughts would be appreciated.

How do you know the ones you have are not correct? Have you found him in a census with his parents or do you have a marriage certificate for him? If so, then if buying from the local register office you can specify that you only want the certificate if father is x or whatever. The free index on ancestry and freebmd may not be fully complete - you can check the coverage. Occasionally births do not reach the main GRO list so it is always worth trying locally.

There is a 1853 John McKenna registered in Newcastle-according to the Newcastle registration site. I am not sure if they publish according to birthdate or according to when the child was actually registerd But I think that one was illigitmate with a mother named Julia as there is a baptism in All Saints for a John and a Thomas in 1853 and in Novemberr so the registration could be March quarter in 1854. The GRO index definately goes by the quarter. This Thomas and John were illegitimate sons of Julia McKenna.
Have your tried looking for a baptism?

Pughy.
Baptism Record.
Born 18 May 1853. Bapt. 22 May 1853. John, son of James and Margaret
McKenna, nee Thornton
Godparents: John Brennan and Ellen Markey ( or Mackey, Mackay ? )
Priest Jos. Humble.
Eight baptisms performed on 22nd, a Sunday, John's was the 5th one recorded.
This was from a film of St Mary's RC church records.
But the baptisms were catalogued that they may include some bapts that took place at St Andrew's RC church.

HI Michael
Sorry for taking so long to reply been tied up on something else.
You are a star that has to be him.
My only problem is on searching the ROOTSIRELAND site for Marriages which I had searched in anticipation of getting the information I did not find a Margaret with a maiden Name THORTON,
But I will give it another shot.
Thanks Again

Pughy,
If I read it properly the maiden name was " Thornton" ,not Thorton.
Trivia Angle. In the movie "The Quiet Man", John Wayne plays "Sean Thornton"
